Big Three sold out

Big Three sold out

Before anyone starts sending death threats to my e-mail account, or punches me in the gut screaming, “Ford put food on my family’s table for 50 years, commie!” allow me to point out that I am a native Michigander, both my father and my uncle built Ford trucks in the 1960s, I have owned vehicles manufactured by Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, and most importantly, I love Michigan.

Having said that, the Big Three sold us out. Americans who buy foreign cars did not.

Right plays blame game

You know, it’s amazing how the Right can make all the excuses in the world about how they lost. The fact is they lost because they were just being plain stupid.

My faith in the American people was vindicated when, in one night, they swept away the sad and pathetic politics of the Republican regime that has been office for the last eight years. Now it’s interesting that for the last few weeks, the Right has attempted to blame Sen. Barack Obama for the collapse of the financial market. I don’t see how anyone can blame him.

Capital outlay shows EMU’s commitment to science education

After Tuesday’s festivities at the Mark Jefferson building groundbreaking, I think many students are thankful to finally see the sciences brought to the forefront at Eastern.

As a biology major I know I am personally ecstatic to see the long needed renovation of Mark Jefferson get underway. Even though I will not be here to experience the new facilities, it is great to see Eastern brought up to date so these often underpublicized departments can compete on a state and national level for research grants and funding.

Prop. 8 passage marks a long road to equality

Prop. 8 passage marks a long road to equality

There are wildfires raging throughout California today, but those blazes pale in comparison to the political firestorm that has swept the Golden State since the passage on November 4th of Proposition 8, the state’s new consitutional ban on gay marriage.

The state’s voters decided by less than a five percent margin that, in the exact words of this simple amendment to their Constitution, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California.”

Socialism piece bad journalism, not even good sensationalism

As an Eastern alumnus, I was pretty discouraged to read the article "Socialism will not fix our country,” written by opinions columnist Chris Hoitash.

While it's true that this was in the Opinions section of the paper, it is my belief that an opinion must be based on, and presented with, factual information. Anything else is disinformation, poor journalism, and agenda setting at its worst format.

Messiah-elect faces hurdles

Well, I managed to live to see the second coming. Of a Democrat in office, not Christ. Although, considering what’s been said about the new president-elect, he may well be on the way to a messiah complex. Mozeltov to the new prez-elect, may his single term be so horrible that the Democrats are booted out of office for a good long time.

GOP must allow Obama expanded executive power

In February 2001, Vice President Dick Cheney secretly met with oil and gas executives to craft the Bush administration’s new energy policy. Republicans firmly supported the VP’s unlimited “executive privalege” to conceal from congress whom he meets with and what he discusses. The president needs his candid advice, right?

Students need to show others more respect

There comes a time in every students college career when they look back and think, “What could I have done differently?”

Lots of ideas come to mind about procrastinating less, maybe calling our parents more often, or spending a little less money on beer and pizza.

While this list certainly applies to me, I remembered another one of my regrets while I was sitting in the Student Center computer lab a few nights ago.

Can children be murderers too?

In the aftermath of a historic November 4th, it is difficult to find any front page without a picture of President-Elect Barack Obama. Yes, we get it; black man in the White House and all. Not for another few months, though, so in the meantime, can't we focus on other, equally important things?

Like, for example, the reason behind an Arizona Police Chief's comment, “We have solved the crime. Now we have to solve the mystery of why.”

What was the crime?

Hope isn't a gift from politicians

Letter to the Editor

This past week there was much celebration in many areas of the country, and even in a few parts of the globe outside the U.S. (most notably in Europe and Kenya) due to the election of Barack Obama.

In addressing this issue let me first start off by saying that even though I did not vote for Sen. Obama, I think it is a very good thing that our country provides opportunities for minorities. I also think that he will be a terrific president.
