The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team hadn’t won an invitational title since it won the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2008, but that changed Sunday when the team shot a 296 in the final round to win the 41st annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate championship in Columbus, Ohio.

EMU’s victory came against competition from the likes of Penn State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Kent State, Charlotte, Ohio State, Wisconsin, North Texas, Houston and Xavier.

Cam Burke (a 70 on Sunday) led the Eagles, ending the three-day competition with a score of 210.

He was especially impressive on the final day making an eagle and three birdies to finish third overall.

Marty Jeppesen (69) was nearly equally impressive, finishing with a 212 and a tie for fourth overall.

He led the tournament in birdies, making 15.

EMU’s next competition is the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., April 24-25.

Softball drops four over weekend

The EMU softball team couldn’t come away with any wins on its trip over the weekend, losing 3-1, and, 10-1, to Miami of Ohio in a doubleheader Friday, then 3-1, and, 4-3, to Ball State on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Sunday’s defeat might have stung the most, as EMU held the lead into the sixth inning until Ball State (24-9) mounted a comeback and scored three runs in the inning.
EMU is 11-19 and 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play.

Gymnasts Millick, Viltz close out season

Kaylyn Millick and Nikole Viltz participated in the Lexington Regional at Memorial Coliseum in Kentucky on Saturday, with neither advancing in the NCAA competition.

Millick competed in the all-around portion of the event (and tied for 35th), with Viltz competing in the balance beam (didn’t place).

It was the first trip to an NCAA regional for both gymnasts.
