Eastern Michigan University experts will offer insight into the ongoing conflict in Egypt during a campus “teach-in” today in the Student Center.
The event will be held in Ballroom A from 6- 8 p.m.
The panelists will include individuals with expertise in the Middle East and they will explain exactly what is going on, what it means, and how it affects everyone.
Sociology professor Mansoor Moaddel will be one of the panelists on-hand to answer questions.
Moaddel, a graduate of Shiraz University in Iran, specializes in culture and ideology of the Middle East, Middle Eastern politics and governments, and the future of Islamic fundamentalism and its effects on the United States.
Moaddel has several published works, including his most recent “Religious Fundamentalism in the Middle East.”
Moaddel has won awards for his book “Islamic Modernism, Nationalism, and Fundamentalism: Episode and Discourse.” He was co-winner of the 2007 Distinguished Book Award from the Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association and winner of the 2007 Scholarly Achievement.
Professor John Knight, will also offer his opinion and expertise on the matter. Knight, an Oxford University graduate, is assistant professor of modern Middle East history at EMU.
Knight has lived and traveled through several parts of the Middle East, and teaches courses about the Arab-Israeli conflict as well as the Middle East since the rise of Islam.
The program is open and free of charge to interested students, faculty and staff members.
