Campus area crime: Aug. 17 through Sept. 4

The police blotter is a report of criminal activity that has been reported in the Ypsilanti-area as well as on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. The following crimes were reported between Aug. 17 through Sept. 4.

Monday, Aug. 17

  • An individual fled on foot following a traffic stop. The nature of crime was reported as obstruction of police. The crime occurred near the intersection of N Congress Street and Oakwood Street at 4:47 p.m. The case is currently open.

  • A fourth degree of criminal sexual assault - forceable contact was reported at 4:53 p.m. The crime occurred in Sept. of 2019 at The Hover Building on EMU’s campus. The case is currently open.

Tuesday, Aug. 18

  • A driver was reported as operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs. This occurred near the intersection of Washtenaw Avenue and N Summit Street at 3:35 a.m. This case is currently open.

Wednesday, Aug. 19

  • Vehicle theft by unlawfully driving away was reported at the Physical Power Plant Lot on EMU’s campus at 4:50 p.m. A stolen vehicle was found at the scene. The vehicle had been reported as stolen in Jan. 2020. This case is currently open.

Thursday, Aug. 20

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Friday, Aug. 21

  • No crimes were reported on this day

Saturday, Aug. 22

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Sunday, Aug. 23

  • An owner of a vehicle was reported as allowing an unlicensed person to drive while having open intoxicants. This case contains multiple charges. This was reported at W Cross Street and Washtenaw Avenue at 1:50 a.m. This case is closed.

Monday, Aug. 24

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Tuesday, Aug. 25

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Wednesday, Aug. 26

  • An individual was found with open intoxicants near the intersection of Emmet Street and Ballard Street at 4:56 a.m. This is qualified as a liquor violation crime. This case is closed.

Thursday, Aug. 27

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Friday, Aug. 28

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Saturday, Aug. 29

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Sunday, Aug. 30

  • No crimes were reported on this day.

Monday, Aug. 31

  • An individual was reported as having a weapon on the EMU campus in the Sellers Residence Hall at 3:20 p.m. This case is open.

  • An individual was found driving with a suspended license with open alcohol in the vehicle near the intersection of N Adams Street and W Forest Avenue at 9:23 p.m. This case contains multiple charges. This case is closed.

Tuesday, Sept. 1

  • Assault/battery/simple including domestic and on a police officer was reported at Sellers Residence Hall at 12:23 p.m. Roommates were reported to be fighting. This case is closed. 

As of Thursday, Sept. 3, the EMU police department released the first timely warning of the semester. An email notification was sent out to all students and staff regarding an investigation involving an off-campus armed robbery that occurred on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 9:02 p.m.

The reporting individuals reported the incident to police after a 10 minute delay. The location of the robbery was noted as 1501 Washtenaw Ave. The suspect reportedly walked into a business and demanded money, and then fled west from the scene.

EMU police reported the suspect was described as a black male in his 40’s. At the time of the crime, the suspect was wearing black jeans and a black Nike jacket with a red outline and red Nike swoosh. The suspect was also reported to be carrying a black handgun and a bag. The email noted all individuals that have further information related to this incident to contact the Ypsilanti Police Department at 734-483-9510.
