The Eastern Michigan University Department of Public Safety and State Fire Marshall are investigating a fire in an empty computer lab at the Mark Jefferson Science Complex on Tuesday, Nov. 30, as suspected arson.

The cause of the fire is considered “suspicious in nature,“ according to EMU.

The Science Complex building will reopen for classes Monday, Dec. 6, but the computer lab, room 152, will remain closed for the rest of the semester, according to EMU. Students will be notified of their new classroom location through email.

The fire was contained to a single computer, according to EMU.

The Ypsilanti Fire Department and EMU Department of Public Safety responded to the fire in room 152 on Tuesday afternoon, and no injuries were reported. The sprinkler system was activated, and the building was evacuated.

The EMU Department of Public Safety is asking for anyone with additional information, pictures, or videos to contact Detective Sergeant Shana Thompson at 734-487-2882.
