‘100 Days with Tata’: An absolute must watch!

"100 Days with Tata" is a documentary-style film recounting 100 days spent during the pandemic between actor Miguel Ángel Muñoz and his great-grandmother’s sister Luisa Cantero.

Most people do not have the opportunity to have a relationship with their great-grandmother’s sister, or even their great-grandmother, but for actor Miguel Ángel Muñoz, it is a relationship he will always cherish. This movie was a passion project dedicated to immortalizing the memories he has made with Luisa, whom he affectionately refers to as "Tata." It follows how their relationship began, their trips across the world and how everything changed during the pandemic, eventually leading to Tata becoming an Instagram star and inspiring millions worldwide.

Miguel considers both him and Tata to be the more eccentric members of their family, and that bonded them together while Miguel’s parents were frequently away at work. Over the years, Tata and Miguel’s relationship grew stronger as Miguel took more responsibility for her care. Being an actor, Miguel frequently travels, and he made sure to bring Tata along for as many trips as he could. During the pandemic, Miguel ended up living with Tata in her small apartment in order to provide her with the 24-hour attention she needed in her old age.

A lot of day-to-day activities are difficult for Tata, and between her constant need for attention and Miguel dealing with the physical and mental repercussions of being her sole caregiver, their relationship became strained as the pandemic forced people indoors. However, Miguel had an idea to make a short spoof TV series between him and Tata via Instagram where they talk, make jokes and offer advice to anyone who would listen.

This documentary offers a pleasant view into the lives of this unique pair, and their love and dedication to one another are nothing less than inspiring. Hearing Tata exclaim her love and appreciation for Miguel is enough to make a grown man cry, and Miguel’s willingness to do anything to make Tata happy is shown time and time again through his gentle actions and loving words.

One thing to note about this movie before watching is that the film is entirely in Spanish, so unless you are fluent, subtitles will be needed. When rating this movie, I cannot give this any less than a 10 out of 10. Watching such a special and unlikely relationship flourish through such a difficult time was inspiring and heartfelt, to say the least. It is a great movie to watch with a loved one!
