Early Tuesday, a man opened fire at two police officers responding to a domestic situation. One officer was fatally shot and the other wounded.

The incident occured around midnight when the officers entered 63-year-old Elvin Potts’ home in Jackson.

Police officials said Potts shot at the officers three times and one officer returned fire,killing Potts.

Officer James Bonneau,a 2006 graduate of Eastern Michigan University’s criminal justice program, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Bonneau was 26.

Darrin McIntosh,a 22-year old Blackman Township public safety officer,was shot in the leg.

McIntosh is expected to make a full recovery.

Bonneau grew up in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 2002.

Bonneau’s father, Marc Bonneau, told media outlets that his son had dreams of being a police officer since he was a child.

Bonneau got a job in the Jackson police department in 2007.

Bonneau had a girlfriend that lives in Pinckney and is survived by his parents, sister and brother.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Griffin Funeral Home, located at 42600 Ford Road in Canton.

Viewing will be Friday at 9 a.m. with the funeral following at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Lutheran Church, located at 7000 North Sheldon Rd.
