Capital outlay shows EMU’s commitment to science education

After Tuesday’s festivities at the Mark Jefferson building groundbreaking, I think many students are thankful to finally see the sciences brought to the forefront at Eastern.

As a biology major I know I am personally ecstatic to see the long needed renovation of Mark Jefferson get underway. Even though I will not be here to experience the new facilities, it is great to see Eastern brought up to date so these often underpublicized departments can compete on a state and national level for research grants and funding.

Another welcome sight is the newly approved agenda the EMU Board of Regents passed yesterday afternoon. The selection of Strong Hall as the new priority for capitol outlay appropriations shows that the regents and administration are fully committed to making Eastern a leading competitor in the sciences.

The building, built in 1941, has not received any significant improvements or renovations since its construction. Together both projects will attract a new caliber of students and facility, which will be able to flourish with the new facilities and resources. It’s great to see that these departments are getting some long-needed attention.

Student Government will begin lobbying for capitol outlay appropriations in the new calendar year. If you are interested in visiting state legislators in Lansing with EMU’s Student Government please e-mail me or visit our office, Room 342 in the Student Center.
