Football talk, rust?Eastern hasn't played football since Nov. 1. That's 21 days, but who's counting? I'm not sure if I've ever seen a football team with such a big layoff. The Eagles will play at Temple on Saturday, and coach Jeff Genyk is a bit worried about being "rusty." "That’s certainly our concern," Genyk said. "We’ve really tried to continue to keep the intensity by practicing the first-string offense versus the first-string defense, but it’s really hard to replicate game speed – especially on special teams. »

Maggie Manville pitched a shutout behind solid defense to help Eastern Michigan earn its first victory, 3-0, against Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne Friday at Scicluna Field.
“We were looking to switch the field, open up the field and make it easier to play around the other team,” defender Katie Zundel said.
The Eagles (1-0-1) dominated from the outset in a very physical game. They controlled throughout with aggressive defense, crisp passing and consistent effort.
“Against a good IPFW team who’s young, I think we were able to wear them down,” coach Scot Hall said.
IPFW goalie Meagan McLaughlin made many diving saves to keep the game scoreless in the first half.
The Eagles turned in their best half to date after the break.
Katie Lozar scored on a booming kick from 30 yards that just got over the outstretched fingers of Kristen McFadden, who replaced McLaughlin and gave up all three goals, to give EMU a 1-0 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Chelsea Detrick added an unassisted goal on a loose ball in front of the net with nine minutes remaining.
Deana Kinter outran McFadden to knock in her second goal of the season with just moments to go for the Eagles’ final score.
Eastern Michigan had 13 shots, compared to IPFW’s four. The Eagles also beat IPFW (1-2-0) in corner kicks, 7-0.
Kaitlin Ehman was carried off the field in the fist half after colliding with an IPFW player while chasing a loose ball.
“They’re taking her in for x-rays on her arm and her knee, and we’re a bit nervous to see what happens with that,” coach Hall said.
The Eagles next game is against Detroit Mercy Tuesday in Detroit.
