Last Monday, I attended an event here at Eastern Michigan where Gov. Jennifer Granholm was in attendance. The event itself was held in order to get more support to save the Michigan Promise Scholarship.

A couple of things that I would like to point out: 1.) This particular cut was initiated in the House, which is controlled by Democrats. The Senate merely kept that in their version of the bill because the House had already approved it. 2.) Granholm has a $47 billion budget. Are you really telling me that she couldn’t find $120 million to cut somewhere to save the scholarship? She probably could have; instead, she decided to lobby for $600 million in additional revenue to fund the PS and other additional entitlement programs. 3.) She is the Governor and has the power to veto. If she so vehemently opposed the cutting of this scholarship, why did she sign the budget? 4.) The state also cut funding to certain grant and scholarship programs for the states National Guardsmen. No one has made a peep about this, and these are men and women who volunteer their time and energy back to the state. You can blame Mike Bishop and the Senate Republicans all you want, but when it comes down to it, the worst you can say is that it was a bipartisan effort to cut funding for the Promise scholarship.
