Eastern Michigan University punter Zach Johnson has signed a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Johnson, a second-team Mid-American Conference selection last season, appeared at the Chiefs’ mini camp April 30-May 1.

Johnson, a 6-foot, 185-pounder, finished third in the MAC in 2009 with a 40.4 yard-per-punt average. He also had 17 punts inside the 20 and his 40.2 average for his career is third best in school history.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Quarterback is coming off knee injury
Andy Schmitt and Spenser Smith were invited as tryouts to the Detroit Lions’ rookie camp over the past weekend.
Schmitt’s career as an Eagle ended in the game against the University of Michigan last season when he suffered a knee injury in the final quarter.

The quarterback finished his time with EMU ranking second in school history in career completions (607) and total offensive plays (1,210). He set NCAA single-game record in 2008 when he threw for 76 times without an interception against Temple, and broke marks for pass attempts (80) and completions (58) against Central Michigan.

Smith, a defensive lineman, played for EMU in 2008 and appeared in 10 games totaling 31 tackles, eight for a loss and two sacks.
