Nostalgia: Genyk on ESPN, Boykins back in NBA

Jeff Genyk poses in his final game at Eastern Michigan. He is now a college football commentator for ESPN360.com.

Some older Eastern Michigan names have found their way back in the news recently, including former football coach Jeff Genyk and guard Earl Boykins.

Genyk is working for ESPN360.com as a commentator for football games. To say the least, he didn’t have the greatest tenure at EMU. He went 16-42 during his five seasons and was fired before the last game of 2008.

I’m wary when it comes to unsuccessful coaches or general managers turning to the tube to offer their opinion, take Detroit Lions wrecker Matt Millen an an example. However, I think this is a different because it’s on a smaller scale, and it’s nice to see Genyk working in something he’s so passionate about.

The last time I could find Genyk announcing was the Maryland-Duke game on Oct. 24. If you know of a more recent game, let me know.

ESPN360.com is free on college campuses and military bases, but a subscription is needed otherwise.

Boykins was signed Wednesday by the Washington Wizards, the Associated Press and Yahoo! Sports reported.

Former Michigan State standout Paul Davis was waived to make room for the 5-foot-5 Boykins, 33, who played for Virtus Bologna in Italy last season. He played for EMU from 1995-98, and was part two NCAA tournament teams (95-96 and 97-98).

Washington is Boykins’ ninth NBA team, and he last played for the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007-08. He’s averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 assists during his career.

“I was out of the NBA, but as long as you’re getting paid to play basketball, it’s not that bad,” Boykins told The Washington Times, which also has a video interview with the 10-year veteran.

“I went to Europe and had some success over there, but I just didn’t want to go back this year. I wanted to return to the NBA.”

The difference between Millen and Genyk is that Millen was an established broadcaster BEFORE he took the job as Lions GM. In fact, it was his broadcasting that got him the Lions jb.

“I’m weary when it comes to unsuccessful coaches or general managers turning to the tube to offer their opinion…”

How about “wary.”

Justin,
What Eastern are you echoing?

Going 16-42 at EMU is like winning the national championship at CMU.

In almost every game that Genyk coached the eagles were competitive.

Also, given how difficult it is to recruit quality players there, the offense was very good.

The facilities are horrible, the fan base is a joke, and you are in the shadow of one of the strongest college football teams in the nation.

Why do you think Brian Kelly and Ron Vanderlende turned the job down?

The right thing to do would have been to learn from NIU and Joe Novak, and extend Genyk’s contract. EMU was close to turning the ship, but now the ship is sunk.

Wary of unsuccessful coaches on TV?… your writing is a joke, and you are an idiot.

I am guessing the both you and Ron English would kill for 16-42 now.

How does the longest losing streak in the country feel? Also E-MOO was the only team in the country to go 0-fer.

The only echo that I hear is the one from the empty space between your ears.

Hey Lost Huron you may have been too busy loathing life to realize that Western Kentucky (its in the FBS now) also went O-fer as well as the Eagles.

Your research is a joke

Hey “Guy that knows a thing”,

Unless you are the guy that wrote that stupid article, Wow are you missing the point or what.

The really joke is that you take pride in the fact that there were 2 teams that didn’t win a game instead of one. Sorry.

Has it really gotten so bad that, instead of being angry at the school, athletic dept, and coaching staff for running our football team into the ground, that you would actually feel like I in some way am out of line for questioning a change that was obviously for the worst?

I’m not loathing anything. It’s just that our football team was really close to being good, actually competitive in every game, and now it is the worst in the country.

Think about that…Even “The Echo” rated EMU THE WORST FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE COUNTRY.

Genyk was a really good coach, and now we get to suffer.

But at least you get to take pride in my error.
