Auction is boost for Freighthouse
It was a fun Friday night for those who attended the auction held to benefit the restoration of the Ypsilanti Freighthouse but also successful for organizers.The event raised more than 45000 with approximately 225 people bidding on items ranging from a private lunch at Beezys Cafe to an African safari in Zululand.The goal for the event held at the Michigan Firehouse Museum on Cross Street was 25000.

Man, 19, pleads guilty to murder
The 19-year-old Ypsilanti resident arrested in the May shooting death of 18-year-old Cortez Donald pled guilty to second-degree murder.The information is according to a Washtenaw County Sheriffs Office release which said Daniel Haywood pled guilty to a felony firearm charges in addition to the murder charge.The release said Haywood could face a minimum of 20 years in prison with the two convictions.The original incident took place on May 28 near Donalds home at the 200 block Kirk Street in Ypsilanti Township.

Bee ordinance gets first OK from Council
City Council unanimously passed an ordinance on first reading Tuesday allowing Ypsilanti residents to keep bees.The ordinance had been considered by City Council last month but decided a permit process should be included with the original language and postponed the matter before a vote was taken.If approved on a second reading the ordinance would give residents the opportunity to apply for a permit to keep no more than two bee hives on a parcel of land.
