Launch scheduled for EMU’s digital billboard

Representatives from Eastern Michigan University, the city of Ypsilanti and the convention and visitors bureau are set to gather next Tuesday to cut a ribbon at the site of the city’s first digital billboard.

The billboard, which will be located off of westbound I-94 at Huron Street (exit 183), was constructed by Adams Outdoor Advertising.

The new sign will stand 65-feet high and will provide new advertising opportunities for Ypsilanti, the CVB and EMU.

Eastern receives planning grant

Eastern Michigan University was awarded a nearly half-million dollar grant last week by the U.S. Department of Education.

The grant, which totals $490,517, is intended to assist the university with its emergency management plan. The plan includes work in crisis management, a continuity of operations plan and a communications plan.
EMU last implemented an emergency management plan in 2007.

Congressman John Dingell, D—Mich., commended the Department of Education’s decision to award EMU the grant.

Suspect killed after confrontation with sheriff’s department

After leaving his mother in a house fire a 43-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was shot and killed during a confrontation with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 12:10 a.m. Sunday a witness reported a home in the 1200 block of Pageant, Ypsilanti Twp was on fire and that one male suspect was seen leaving the premises with a gun. The caller also stated that they believed that the suspect's mother was still in the home.

Ypsilanti District Library extends application deadline for board position

The Ypsilanti District Library has extended its application deadline for a position on the Board of Trustees.

Residents of the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, or the portion of Superior Township legally served by YDL, who are interested in filling a vacancy on the Ypsilanti District Library Board of Trustees should submit an application to the Library Director (Ypsilanti District Library, 5577 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti, MI 48197) by July 15, 2009.

NIZHNY PANJ, Tajikistan — In August 2007, the presidents of Afghanistan and Tajikistan walked side by side with the U.S. commerce secretary across a new $37 million concrete bridge that the Army Corps of Engineers designed to link two of Central Asia’s poorest countries.

Dressed in a gray suit with an American flag pin in his lapel, then-Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said the modest two-lane span that U.S. taxpayers paid for would be “a critical transit route for trade and commerce” between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Regents pass tuition increase of 3.82 percent

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents passed a tuition increase Tuesday afternoon, as well as an operating budget for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The tuition and fee increase of 3.82 percent means that a full-time undergraduate student taking 30 credit hours per year can expect an average increase of $308 on their yearly tuition bill. A full time master’s student can expect an increase of $404 dollars for tuition.

Deficit elimination looming for YPS

With time winding down before it has to file a deficit elimination plan, the Ypsilanti Public Schools Board of Trustees met Tuesday night for public input regarding proposed budget cuts.

If the board does not have a balanced budget in place for the 2009-2010 academic year by July 1, it will be obligated to file a deficit elimination plan with the state. The state can accept or reject the plan. If it is accepted, YPS will be required to submit regular reports on its financial progress.

‘Ypsitucky’ now ‘Jamboree’

It is simply called, “The Jamboree.”

After much debate, the Depot Town Community Development Corporation decided that would be the name of its bluegrass and roots festival scheduled Sept. 4 and 5 in Riverside Park.

The original “Ypsitucky Jamboree” name has been drawing heat from community members who have said the name was offensive.
