Eastern Michigan University (EMU) hosted a panel titled “Gender in the 2016 Elections” on Oct.27, 2016. The discussion was sponsored by the Political Science department and Women's and Gender Studies. The list of panelists included special guest Debbie Dingell, EMU provost Rhonda Longworth, as well as faculty members Judith Kullberg, Beth Henschel, Suzanne Gray, Janine Driver.
Students in the Early College Alliance (ECA) program at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) believe there are both advantages and disadvantages to being enrolled. ECA is a dual enrollment program offered to high school students. The program has been actively transitioning high school aged students into an environment of collegiate level learning. The ECA faculty offices and student lounge is located toward the center of the south side of campus Julie Anne King Hall.
The film “Suicide Squad” was shown at the Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center as part of Friday night film, a Campus Life event. The film is about a group of villains recruited to stop the Joker, a villain perceived to be an even bigger threat than the recruited crew of villains. In return for completing their mission, the government offered the recruits a shortened prison sentence. The film portrays the Suicide Squad as a group of misfits who aren’t accepted by society, and who wants to have another chance at making it in the world. The crew is named Suicide Squad because of the level of difficulty and how dangerous their mission is.
Eastern Michigan University Theatre succeeded in bringing to life, “Macbeth,” a play written by Shakespeare about a ruler's merciless ambition and the tragedy that follows.

In the African American culture barbershops have always been a space for men to get away and talk, and with that concept in mind Eastern Michigan University’s Brotherhood Scholars Community facilitated a space for free haircuts while Walter Douglas spoke and signed his book, “The Activist Entrepreneur,” Wednesday Oct. 19. In time for Halloween,“Macbeth”, written by British playwright, William Shakespeare, will be performed at Eastern Michigan University’s Quick Theatre. The play is gory tale set in the 11th century about a brutal warrior name Macbeth and his wife whose ambitions for royalty leads to bloody consequences. Lee Stille is the director.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. branches out to Campus Community with SKEE-Week. The Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. launched their SKEE-Week festivities calling it “Pink LEMONADE,” themed after singer Beyoncé’s recent album. SKEE-Week is six days worth of events open to all students at Eastern Michigan University. The purpose of the week is to help people connect with others, and give them the opportunity to see what the AKA ladies are all about.
In honor of October being Domestic Violence Awareness month Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Women’s Resource Center (WRC) hosted True Life: My Experience With Domestic Violence, an exhibit that displayed poems and artwork contributed by victims of domestic violence and children of survivors of domestic violence. The exhibit also showcased work from people who have committed acts of violence.
A Detroit based clothing line called Negash has been creating a line of shoes, shirts, hats and backpacks, the brand was started by Rocklin Jackson, and Avery Norris. The theme is Egyptian kings. Their logo is a Deshret Crown because the crown worn by some Pharaohs in parts of Egypt. The goal is to fuse history with fashion.
Netflix’s new original series Luke Cage, made its debut Oct, 1, becoming the third Marvel hero to have their own series on Netflix, and making it the first Marvel series with an African hero. Due to popularity when the show premiered, Luke Cage crashed the Netflix servers.
Project HEAL of Southeast Michigan will be hosting What Makes Me Beautiful Oct. 14 through Oct. 16. What Makes Me Beautiful is a weekend of activities that encourage body positivity.
Davion Reeder, President of Phoenix, a campus based event planning organization. worked with student leaders from organizations such as You Beautiful Black Women (YBBW) and Student Government to put on Eastern Michigan University’s Eastern Idol. The event transformed EMU Student Center ballroom into a night of trap-karaoke Wednesday, Oct. 5.
King Michael: A Glorious Tribute to the King of Pop, a musical event designed to recreate the feeling of an authentic Michael Jackson concert was held on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Pease Auditorium. The concert featured many of his popular songs, such as “Billie Jean,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Thriller,” and “Black or White.” The main parts performed were by Michael Jackson impersonators. The impersonators were detailed with accurate dance moves and accompanied by backup dancers, like the iconic Moonwalk.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Resource Center at Eastern Michigan University hosted its annual OUTober Flag Display on the lawn of Pray-Harrold, a campus educational building. About 20 students gathered in the lawn located near the center of campus. They planted hundreds of individual tiny red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple flags to represent a large rainbow flag that symbolizes EMU’s diverse LGBTQ+ community.
The aftermath of the hate speech discovered Tuesday morning on EMU’s campus was immediate. Students gathered at the scene of the incident. There were some students that voiced and held signs to display their frustration. Throughout the day faculty, students and other campus patrons visited the scene to get more information, and to show their support against the negative message sprayed on the wall.
