Mental healthcare in America has emerged as a subject about which a growing number of Americans are passionate. According to a study commissioned by Universal Health Services, Inc., around 71% of respondents indicated that one’s mental and physical health are of equal importance, and almost all of them (96.8%) said mental illness represents “legitimate medical illnesses." This is unsurprising considering the growing scope of mental illness in the United States with, as reported by the National Institute of Mental Health, almost 20% of American adults suffering from any mental illness in 2017.

Everyday it seems like the current situation that we are living in is getting worse. We wake up and it seems like the current situation has escalated so much more from the day before. We are constantly wondering when we will finally hit the worst of it, and we all find ourselves wondering when things will start to slow down again and start to go back to normal.

After years of cuts to public health funding during the Obama and Trump administrations, the United States was primed to suffer at the hands of COVID-19 come early January. While funding has been approved to provide free testing and paid sick leave, 87 million Americans are still uninsured or underinsured. Many Americans work jobs where they don’t receive sick leave, and still go to work when they’re sick in order to pay their bills. Many of these workers, like food service workers, retail and grocery workers, are still working right now- they’re considered essential. It’s extremely ironic that these essential workers don’t receive benefit
s or a living wage.

After former Vice Pres. Joe Biden’s big win in Michigan, it looks unlikely that Sen. Bernie Sanders will face Pres. Donald Trump. On Feb. 22, things looked different. Sanders had just won the Nevada caucus by more than 25 points. The centrist vote was split between Biden, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg. As long as these three candidates remained in the race until after Super Tuesday, things were looking good for Sanders.

Going into election night, Michigan was considered a must-win for Sanders. Many of his surrogates and pundits/pollsters pointed to his 2016 upset, suggesting it could very well happen again. Others weren’t so sure. I fell solidly into the latter category.

In 2018, Michigan cemented its status as a state to look at for electoral reforms, as all three 2018 referenda passed handily. While Proposal 1 legalized recreational marijuana in the state, Proposals 2 and 3 addressed such issues as gerrymandering and voter access, both passing with over 60 percent “yes" votes.

The new visual is for “Godzilla,” the highest charting single from new album “Music to Be Murdered By,” delivered on March 9. I was in downtown Ypsi last week and walking out of a poetry slam event at the Riverside Arts Center with a friend when I realized how hungry I was. Being in the downtown area and being a vegetarian, I couldn’t really think of any good go-to restaurants that wouldn’t be super expensive.
