The Michigan Office of the Attorney General has denied charges against the Washtenaw County Deputy Sheriff involved in a use of force incident which took place earlier this year in Ypsilanti Township. The Attorney General’s office justified the deputy’s response claiming that he had responded appropriately "given the level of resistance by those being arrested."

Dr. Nelson Amos, a professor of guitar and music history and Ypsilanti storefront owner, will retire in April from EMU after 46 years of teaching at the university. Amos is the oldest faculty member, at 81 years old.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic forced classes online, the Eastern Michigan University Student Government elections that usually take place in March have been postponed until late September. When election dates are announced, students will receive an email via their university email accounts with information on where and how to vote. The dates for the election have yet to be announced by the university’s Office of the President.

The Charter Township of Ypsilanti Board of Trustees voted down two options to purchase additional ballot scanners during their meeting on Aug. 26. The scanners would have been used to count absentee ballots for the upcoming general election.

Ypsilanti’s City Council held a virtual meeting Tuesday evening, Sept. 1. Council members voted on whether to allow medical and recreational marijuana retailers to open in neighborhood corridors, as well as an increase to the budget for ballot return postage. Other highlights included a report from the City of Ypsilanti Chief of Police on the completion of mental health training by all officers in the department and an increase to the residential cost of water and sewage in the city.

Due to budget constraints resulting from the pandemic, public funding to state universities in Michigan is being cut by $200 million, according to the Detroit Free Press. Among the many impacted universities and institutions is Eastern Michigan University.

Throughout the United States, how universities and schools will open in the fall has been a point of uncertainty since the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cessation of in-person classes in March. How to teach and house students, while adhering to physical distancing guidelines, has proven a logistical nightmare for universities. Health experts have questioned whether re-opening, even with adherence to physical distancing guidelines, is worth the potential health risks for both students and instructors.
