Around 50 or so individuals filled the halls of the Alexander Music Building, as Katherine Hagar gave her senior recital, Nov. 13. The recital was one of her last requirements to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music education.
St. Luke's Episcopal Church invited the Ypsilanti and Eastern Michigan University (EMU) community to a festive a dinner where students and beyond could come to a safe place to discuss the election results, respond and move forward.
This weekend, “Vital Signs”, a play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jane Martin, comes to EMU. It is a collage of monologues about the experience of being a woman, through all the trials and triumphs, glories and griefs. The play is designed to initiate conversation about the different worlds in which women live.
Chicago native hypnotist Chrisjones performed in the Eastern Michigan Student Center, Nov. 9. There was a large turnout of students and faculty.
VISION Volunteer Center at EMU is partnering with SOS Community Services to host a food drive for citizens of Ypsilanti, Michigan. SOS Community Services works to eliminate homelessness throughout Washtenaw County. Housing stability and family independence is promoted by SOS through collaboration, care and respect.
For over three years, local businesses in Ypsilanti have collaborated with local talent in creating a monthly, self-guided art walk the first Friday of each month, sometimes with a set theme, as well as free art activities and musical performances.
“Finding Dory” was shown at Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center on Nov. 4 as part of Campus Life’s “Friday Night Movie” program. The film was originally released on June 17, and grossed over $1 billion dollars on opening night, making it the biggest grossing night for an animated film premier.
Eastern Michigan University hosted the annual Digital Divas event on Nov. 4. Middle school girls participated in hands-on breakout sessions throughout the day. The girls that attended the event learned about technology and the advantages of studying technology. The mission of Digital Divas is to connect young female students to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Youmacon, an anime and comic book based convention kicked off its 12th consecutive year in Detroit. Youmacon is a celebration of Japanese popular culture such as Anime, Manga, Japanese pop music (J-Pop) and more.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County hosted a fundraiser breakfast, Rise and Shine for Kids’ Sake, an event geared towards bringing potential donors together to inform and raise money for the organization, on Nov. 3. Among the donors in attendance were former Eastern Michigan University President Donald Loppnow, Governor Rick Snyder and Michigan’s First Lady Sue Snyder.
Every October 26th at the Quirk Hotel, someone gets murdered. That was the premise of this year’s Dead Gallery, EMU Theatre’s annual Halloween show. This year the show was written by EMU senior Tyler Calhoun, the play presented vignettes of how different people were murdered at the hotel. Performances ran every twenty minutes for four hours.
You Beautiful Black Woman (YBBW) hosted a best friend challenge Wednesday Oct. 26, in Eastern Michigan’s Student Center. There event was made up of four teams with two individuals on each team, and the goal is to find out how well you know your best friend through a series of questions and events. During the event it was almost like everyone there was already a family, which provided a friendly atmosphere and made the event even more enjoyable to witness.
The 1st Annual Ypsi Glow event was put on by Wonderfools Productions, known for the Festifools and Fool Moon festivals the group puts on each year in Ann Arbor. The streets of downtown Ypsilanti were lit up on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016. The event lasted from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
