“With just five weeks until its deadline, a secretive Congressional committee seeking ways to cut the federal deficit is far from a consensus, and party leaders may need to step in if they want to ensure agreement, say people involved in the panel’s work,” reported the New York Times. The secretive committee, officially known as the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, has come to the expected impasse. Its membership comprised of six Republicans and six Democrats, evenly divided between members of the Senate and the House.

It’s happening more and more. Something insignificant turns into a firestorm. You throw a stone into a river, and it floods the town. You spend $2,000 on a decorative phone booth, and people get really upset.

It’s been a bad year for Netflix. A 60-percent price hike came out of nowhere and turned the DVD portion of the company into Qwikster and then back to Netflix.

It seems as if we’ve always been having this fight, but it certainly flared up a little in the last year. Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan made headlines with Republican legislatures and/or governors taking big steps on education and public union reforms.

Five decades ago, the Soviet Union sent a man into space. The United States countered twelve years later by putting footprints on the moon. We orbited the Earth, launched satellites to the furthest reaches of the solar system, and built a space station in the heavens. Yet recently, our ambitious have slowed, the shuttle program was discontinued, and those footprints are quietly fading away.

It’s not unreasonable to ask a few questions about President Obama authorizing a drone strike that killed American-born Al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen on Sept.30. Congressman Ron Paul thinks it might be an impeachable offense and several others, including MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, have asked if the targeted killing of an American citizen by the United States is legal.

If you haven’t heard, identity politics are in. In the last two weeks or so, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain announced he could win one third of the black vote. President Obama’s numbers are sinking with Jewish voters, and apparently also with white, liberal voters.

Spend $447 billion, cut $1.5 trillion. Not enough, too much.

Bruce Catton called baseball “the greatest conversation piece ever invented.” It’s pretty hard to argue he’s wrong. Walk into the bank, the barbershop or your favorite watering hole and you’ll hear people talking about the local team.

It’s been a big year for the future of education.

Think about your life 10 years ago. Some of you were in second grade. Some of you were in the same jobs you are today. Maybe since then you’ve changed careers, changed majors or changed states. You might have had your first kiss or first kid. Met your soul mate or lost your job.

It’s been a tremendously fun summer if you love watching the following activities: brinksmanship, showmanship, talk show host meltdowns and screaming. If you like accomplishing big tasks or being honest with people, you might not have enjoyed yourself so much.

Mired in a year long slump, Brandon Inge watched the Tigers trade for Royals third baseman Wilson Betemit on Wednesday to serve as his replacement down the stretch. It was a move that was hard to swallow for the longest tenured Tiger, but Inge handled it with the class that made him a fan favorite over the last 11 years in the Motor City.

Think about the people you root for and support. Think about the people your children look up to or the people your siblings try to emulate. Are they worthy of that praise?

While most of the country is locked in a debate about entitlement reform and jobs creation, the soon-to-be-former Defense Secretary still wants to talk about healthcare. Specifically, Robert Gates wants to talk about how much of the military budget is eaten up by rising healthcare costs and pensions.

Mitch Daniels isn’t running for president. The establishment Republican political observer and scholar inside of me is utterly heartbroken. He was just about everything I was looking for in a president. He had the right kind of experience, he had the right personality, the right demeanor and the right values.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he’s dead. If you ask me, he got off easy. He should have had to sit in solitary confinement for the rest of his life with nothing but time to reflect on the horrible things he has done.

Last year at this time, I told you not to waste your summer trying to pin down the next Republican standard bearer. It was too early. Too much could happen. 2012 was a long way off. But with Memorial Day 2011 around the corner, presidential contenders are starting to make their move.

It won’t come as a surprise to most of you that the state budget woes are causing some panic at public universities across Michigan.
