Imagine waiting to present your hard work put into your undergraduate senior thesis, with only a month until your presentation. That was Kaitlyn Eby position, who was one of the many EMU students who planned to present in the EMU Undergraduate Winter Symposium. Her plans, however were cut short by the COVID-19 global pandemic, and EMU’s decision to suspended in-person classes. Her presentation, along with all of her peers, were cancelled along with the whole of the 40th EMU Undergraduate Symposium.

Despite the pandemic, Swoop's Pantry, EMU's on-campus food pantry, is continuing to serve students in need of groceries, hygiene items, clothes, and other basic goods. Joelle Summers, the graduate assistant at Swoop's Pantry, discusses the changes that were made to accommodate this emergency situation.

At EMU, many student services were placed in difficult position as COVID-19 continues to affect all aspects of life. Among these services, Swoop’s Pantry, located at 104 Pierce Hall, experiences an increase in the use of their services and adjustment to social distancing practices.

Kylie Gilligan: When you hear the word Ombuds, what comes to your mind? If you’re like many Eastern Eagles, you’ve heard of the Ombuds, but you don’t really know what it means. According to Wikipedia, the word “ombuds” itself is defined as a public advocate. At Eastern Michigan University, students, faculty and staff members have access to the Ombuds’ department resources right at their fingertips. EMU’s Ombuds allows students and faculty members to have a chance to become more familiar with different policies and procedures, and help assist in a variety of concerns or questions that involve their time at the university.

On Feb. 6 EMU's Honors College held a lecture titled "Our World, Our Story: A Conversation with Jay’Len Boone." Boone is the eighth United States Youth Observer to the United Nations. This event was open to all EMU students and the general public and toward the end of the event, the audience could participate in open discussion panel with Boone and take photographs with him.

Amtrak is working with the city of Ypsilanti in hopes of constructing a new train station in Depot Town. This is the beginning of investments throughout the metropolitan area in 2020. The train stop/station is expected to help community members travel safely, increase economic prosperity in Washtenaw county and even help EMU students traveling to and from Detroit and Chicago especially.

On Nov. 21, Eastern Michigan University held the first annual Campus Sleep Out located in front of the university's Department of Public Safety. The Campus Sleep-out was a part of the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week from Nov. 16 to Nov. 24 of 2019 sponsored by the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County. The main focus of the Campus Sleep Out was to raise awareness among EMU students and the Ypsilanti community about homelessness.
