“While it’s not new, the 2009 ‘BlakRoc’ album by The Black Keys is still on my iPhone playlists and has one of the highest play counts of any album I own (and I have over 20,000 songs in my music library). Hip-hop producer Damon Dash, cofounder of Roc-A-Fella Records, initiated the recording project because he wanted to work with The Keys, so he brought hip-hop artist Jim Jones into the studio to record with them.

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin approved the investment of roughly $78,000 of the university’s 2012-13 contingency fund this year to upgrade the 42 blue light emergency phones located around EMU’s campus. The upgrade was prompted by the Aug. 24, 2011 unarmed robbery of EMU student Darin Thomas Smith
outside the Warner Building.

The 15th Annual Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival is coming to Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park, July 27 from 5-9 p.m. and July 28 from 1-6 p.m., and will feature about 450 locally crafted beers from more than 60 Michigan breweries and live music from a variety of local bands.

The Shadow Art Fair, a juried event for local artists to exhibit and sell their works, is returning to Ypsilanti’s Corner Brewery July 21 from noon until midnight, and will feature local live music, a specially-crafted Shadow Brew, short films will be shown in the beer garden courtesy of the Ann Arbor Film Festival and several comedians will perform between musical acts.

Eastern Michigan University continued negotiating last week with two of its eight labor unions: the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors which is representing faculty members, and the clerical staff UAW 1975 union. The university already reached an agreement with the police officers’ union on June 26.

Michigan ElvisFest 2012, which was held July 13-14 in Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park, featured live musical performances by 11 award winning Elvis tribute artists, Elvis memorabilia, a classic car show and a trip for two to Graceland was raffled off with the proceeds going to the Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels program.

The Thunder Over Michigan air show is returning to Ypsilanti’s Willow Run Airport August 4th and 5th, and will feature dogfights, battle re-enactments, rides in a Boeing B-17G or North American Aviation B-25D in exchange for a donation and will showcase the only operable privately owned FA-2 Sea Harrier in the world.

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents adopted a 2012-13 budget June 19 that includes a general fund operating budget of $290.6 million, an auxiliary activities operating budget of $42.1 million and a capital budget of $21.7 million. The board also received a three year capital plan.
