EMU falls to Old Dominion in bowl game, 24-20

The Eastern Michigan football team ended its historic 2016 season at the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl as the team fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 24-20, on Friday. This was the Eagles first bowl game since the 1987 California Bowl against San Jose State.

Poor shooting leads to Eagles loss

After a near 20-point victory over St. Bonaventure, Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team lose at home to the Monmouth University Hawks 75-68, Monday night, at the Convocation Center. “Just really disappointed in our effort as a whole,” said Eagles head coach Fred Castro.

Men’s track opens the season at the Findlay Oiler Open

The Eastern Michigan men’s track team opened up the season on Friday, December 9, at the Findlay Oiler Open in Bloomington, where they sent out two heptathletes and six throwers. Of the six throwers, junior Elijah Albert-Grayer led the Eagles, finishing in fourth place with a toss of 17.51 meters.

Wrestling picks up win and a loss at dual home-opener

The Eastern Michigan wrestling team defeated Cleveland State, 38-12, and then fell to Indiana, 25-12 as they kicked off their home schedule with a tri-dual on Saturday, Dec. 11. Redshirt freshman Noah Gonser dominated the day as he won both of his matches including a win over no. 17 ranked Elijah Oliver of Indiana. He forced a fall against Cleveland State and a 7-3 decision against Oliver.

Eagles blow 21 point lead in heartbreaking overtime loss to NIU

The Eastern Michigan football team blew a 21-0 halftime lead in an overtime loss to Northern Illinois at Rynearson Stadium on Wednesday night, 31-24. A week after Eastern Michigan (6-5, 3-4) came back down 21 points to Ball State (4-7, 4-3), the Eagles gave up there 21-0 halftime lead as the Huskies put up a 24 point second-half to send the game into overtime. The Huskies marched right down the field for a touchdown in overtime and the Eagles responded with four straight runs as they fell one yard short of a first down to fall to Northern Illinois, 31-24. “this year one of the things we’ve been able to do is to fight back when we are down,” said coach Chris Creighton. “But one situation we haven’t been in is to be up and for things to be seemingly going well.”

EMU beats Ferris State in home opener 68-50

Head coach Fred Castro and the Eastern Michigan University’s women’s basketball team won their season home opener 68-50 over the Ferris State University Bulldogs, Wednesday afternoon at the Convocation Center. Despite the struggles offensively from the Eagles, junior guard Sasha Dailey led EMU with 28 points to go along with nine rebounds and five steals.

Wrestling kicks off season with 42-0 shutout

The Eastern Michigan wrestling team kicked off their season with a 42-0 win over Olivet College on the road on Friday Nov. 11. Eastern Michigan (1-0) performed their first shutout since the previous season against Michigan State as the Eagles saw five starters who did not perform in the previous season.

Women's swim and dive team defeats Toledo

Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team defeated University of Toledo by 138-110, at home, on Saturday, Nov. 5. The women now had a dual record of 3-0 on the season and extended their Mid-American Conference dual win streak to eight.

Volleyball drops final two road matches

Troubles continued for the Eastern Michigan volleyball team in its matchups against Northern Illinois and Western Michigan this past week. The Eagles only manage to muster one set victory combined in both matches, giving them three set victories in their last five matches.

Eagles Eye: 10/30

The Eastern Michigan football team fell, at home, to the Miami Redhawks 28-15. Quarterback Brogan Roback was sacked five times as the team failed to reach bowl eligibility for the second week in a row. The women's cross country team picked  up their second Mid-American Conference Championship in a row.

EMU women swimming and diving picks up its second win

The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team traveled to Athens, Ohio Oct. 29, to Ohio University where itposted their seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference dual win with a strong performance leaving the score 178-122. Senior Alexis Mitcheltree and sophomores Delaney Duncan Dora Vrcic, and Stephanie Johnston claimed the top spot in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:42.09.

Men’s cross country claims 7th consecutive MAC Championship

The No. 27 ranked Eastern Michigan men’s cross country team claimed their seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday, Oct 29 in Kent, Ohio. The record setting 15 points by the Eagles was eight points fewer than the previous record of 23, which was a record set by the Eagles in 2006 and 2014.

Eagles struggle against Miami in 28-15 loss

The Eastern Michigan football team struggled to run the ball as it failed to reach bowl eligibility for the second week in a row in a 28-15 loss to the Miami Redhawks. Bowl eligibility will have to wait another week as the Eagles ran the ball for as a team for 33 yards compared to Miami’s 230. The Eagles also surrendered five sacks to the Redhawks as the offensive line struggled to protect the quarterback.

EMU’S swim & dive defeats Denison

Both the men and women swimming and diving teams for Eastern Michigan picked up wins at home against Denison University on Saturday, Oct. 22. EMU’s men’s swimming and diving teams’ season commenced a week earlier than the omen’s season as the mens team lost to Northwestern University, 167-128, on Friday, Oct. 14. But the Women’s swim and dive team kicked their season off with a win of 196-99 against Denison. The men followed up with a win against Denison University, topping them at 191-104.

Echo sports profile: Greg Steiner

Greg Steiner is an Associate Athletic Director at Eastern Michigan Universities Athletic Department as he is in charge of the Media Relations Department, as he works to help students improve in their field of media relations. Steiner is in charge of the media relations for the EMU football team, women’s basketball team, and both men’s and women’s golf teams. Steiner has been working for the media relations office for 15 years as he has contributed as an assistant athletic director and the media office’s assistant director.
