EMU investigates a "red face" party held off campus April 11

Eastern Michigan University is investigating a party held April 11 at a house on N. Hamilton St. According to Nathan Phillips, a member of the Native American community, some of the 30 students were dressed up as Native Americans. Phillips spoke with some of students and called the cops.

Controversy over EAA affecting College of Education

While protesters shut down Board of Regents meetings and teachers’ unions boycott Eastern Michigan University student teachers, the College of Education’s faculty is putting all of its efforts into making sure students never miss out on an educational opportunity. “Our students are caught in the political crossfire in their last semester of teacher training,” said Barb Stafford, a university supervisor in the College of Education whose job is to find placements for student teachers. Stafford is just one of an entire team of faculty members in EMU’s College of Education whose day-to-day work has been affected by the university’s affiliation with the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder created the EAA in June 2011 as a statewide school system for failing schools, however the authority has yet to move out of the Detroit area.

Susan Martin leaves a legacy at EMU

After seven years in the captain’s seat, university president Susan Martin is feeling bittersweet about stepping down in July. When she took office in 2008, Martin was ready to turn things around. “Eastern had been through some challenging times and turnover of leadership and everybody was just down,” Martin said.

Gallery opens featuring ground breaking women of EMU

"In Her Shoes: Forging Paths at EMU" is a new exhibit opening Thursday at McKenny Gallery. According to a press release from the university's department of communications, the exhibit will be about the paths women have forged and the barriers women have broken both at Eastern and beyond.

Center for Multicultural Affairs to host "fighting Islamophobia"

The Center for Multicultural Affairs will hold “Fighting Islamophobia,”6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Room 310B in the Student Center. Jim Tran, who organized the event, said students can learn about the basics of Islam and its “involvement in the world today.” “This event is important because there are people that do not know enough about the Islamic faith, so in turn they make assumptions [about] it,”he said. CMA reached out to Eastern Michigan University’s Muslim Student Association to help pick a lecturer. Senior Immad Ahasari, MSA president, said they picked Mustapha El-Turk, a religious leader at the Iona Masjid, Iona, Michigan, because of his credibility. “The main point of what we really want is a productive discussion,”he said.
