Former EMU football player passes away

Former Eastern Michigan University football running back/punt returner Marcus Mathews passed away Wednesday at the age of 48, the university announced in a press release Friday morning. Mathews graduated from Cooley High School in his hometown of Detroit, Mich.

Softball player is named MAC West Player of Week

Amanda Stanton is the starting second baseman for the Eastern Michigan University softball team and was also named Mid-American Conference West division Player of the Week last week following a stellar week, in which she hit 7-for-14 with three home runs (including a grand slam), and raised her batting average from .301 to .325.

Eastern Michigan University announced Friday the search for a new athletic director was officially underway following the departure of former AD Derrick Gragg Jr. at the beginning of the month.
According to a press release issued Friday, “The next EMU athletic director will lead a department known for success on and off the field, along with community service.”

Eastern Michigan University senior Courtney Nicholson is the everyday right fielder for the softball team. She comes to EMU from Canton, Ohio, (home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame) and goes by the nickname “Cordell.”

On Wednesday, the Detroit Lions announced the signing of former Eagle defensive tackle Jason Jones. In four seasons as an Eagle, he registered 175 total tackles, 13 sacks and one forced fumble. Jones began the 2004 season as a tight end before making the switch to the defensive line.
