International Week at Eastern Michigan University is happening Nov. 11-15, bringing together a diverse group of people to celebrate a wide variety of cultures. To celebrate International Week, there are many different aspects being planned and organized.
There is a unique cultural experience for the students, faculty and visitors here at EMU. Without even having to leave the university, one can experience cultures from all across the world.
Many different student groups are involved in putting on this event which will be present at the International Fair, occurring Monday Nov. 11 in the Student Center, Room 310A from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Naomi Palosaari, the international projects manager, is in charge of organizing the International Week events and activities for students. Daniel Hayes, a graduate student studying the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program, is involved in helping to plan this year’s International Week.
Hayes is excited to see all of the different events in the works for next week come together. There is going to be a raffle incorporated into the celebratory events of the week, as well as different poster displays set up for students and visitors to check out.
The different events and activities of International Week also count for Learning Beyond the
Classroom credits approved for EMU students.
At the fair there will be opportunities to explore student groups, see presentations about different cultures and learn more about EMU’s study abroad opportunities.
The scholars panel is a great opportunity to learn about international education opportunities, with a focus on China, Singapore and Germany. This will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in the Student Center, Room 300 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., there will be a screening of the film “The Dialogue” in Halle Library room G03. “The Dialogue” was created by Crossing Borders Films and follows four American and Chinese university students on their international journeys.
International Week will end with the International Experience Forum hosted in the Student Center, Room 320 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14. This is a great chance for students thinking about their next steps to learn about gaining professional experience abroad. There will also be information available on the Fulbright program.
Regardless of major, year or position in our school, International Week has a wide range of experiences to offer to the campus community and its guests.
