The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a reported armed robbery that occurred at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 500 block of Congress Street near Ballard Street and Michigan Avenue. Police reported later this week that they may have identified the suspect.
The victim is a male and does not attend Eastern Michigan University. He told police he was meeting with someone in the area to purchase drugs.
An African American male suspect lured the victim into an alley where he revealed a handgun and demanded the victim’s money. The victim said he struggled with the suspect and grabbed the gun, which unexpectedly discharged and caused a minor injury to the victim’s hand.
The suspect fled the scene on foot after this encounter.
The victim said the suspect was approximately 5-feet, 6-inches tall with short black hair wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts and black shoes.
