Police Blotter, Oct. 26

Monday, Oct. 20

A male suspect was trespassed from the College of Business for panhandling at 10:13 a.m. after students complained to DPS that the suspect was disturbing them on their way to classes.

A student reported that his ex-girlfriend, also a student, had a male friend make harassing phone calls to him at 12:11 a.m. The harassment occurred between Oct. 19 at 11:30 p.m. and Oct. 20 at 12:30 a.m. The female student was issued a warning from DPS and referred to the Department of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

Officers performing a traffic stop at 8:18 p.m. near Huron River Drive and Mayhew Street discovered the driver of the vehicle was operating with a suspended license. He was cited for operating with driver’s license suspended and possession of narcotic paraphernalia. The passenger in the vehicle drove the car away from the incident.

Tuesday, Oct. 21

A student reported her purse, phone and backpack were stolen from the Bruce T. Halle Library at 10:52 a.m. The student fell asleep studying and woke up to find her possessions missing. Officers recovered the stolen items from a different area of the library, but the student’s cash was missing. There are no suspects at this time.

Officers responded to an assault and battery call at Putnam Hall at 2 p.m. A female student reported a male student gave her an unsolicited kiss on the cheek Oct. 18, at 2:30 a.m. The male student was not criminally charged, but may face discipline under the Student Code of Conduct and Community Standards.

Police were called to Walton Hall at 11:21 p.m. A group of eight female students were reported to be fighting in hallway of the residence hall. The students were not criminally cited, but have been referred to the Department of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

Wednesday, Oct. 22

Officers pulled a vehicle over near Huron Street and Lowell Street at 1:39 a.m. The vehicle was driving with its emergency flashers on because its tailgates were not operational. Upon further investigation the officers discovered a substance believed to be marijuana and other narcotic paraphernalia inside the vehicle. The substance has been sent to the Michigan State Police Lab for identification and DPS is seeking criminal charges.

Police reported to Wise Hall because of the odor of marijuana emanating from a student’s room at 12:26 a.m. Upon arrival, police found the room empty, but the student resident has been referred to Department of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

A male student reported being the victim of extortion at 4:23 p.m. The student had met a female on Skype and she had recorded their video conversation without his knowledge and later tried to use the recording as blackmail for monetary gain. Officers are currently investigating the incident.

A third party reported a sexual assault on a female EMU student at 8:10 p.m. The alleged assault occurred at a fraternity house on Oakwood Street at 8:10 p.m. EMU DPS reached out to the victim and encouraged her to seek criminal charges with the City of Ypsilanti Police Department because the crime occurred in their jurisdiction.

Officers were called to Sellers Hall at 9:56 p.m. because of the smell of marijuana coming from a student’s room. Upon further investigation, officers discovered the student had alcohol and drug paraphernalia in his possession. The student was cited for minor in possession, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and may also face discipline under the Student Code of Conduct and Community Standards.

Thursday, Oct. 23

Police pulled a vehicle over near Huron River Drive and Leforge Street at 5:22 p.m. because they could not read the vehicles license plate hanging from the car’s rear windshield. Police discovered the driver had a warrant out for his arrest and was in possession of narcotic paraphernalia. The driver was turned over to Washtenaw County Sheriffs on the warrant and was cited for the paraphernalia.

Officers were called to Phelps Hall at 7:38 p.m. An unknown suspect committed arson by attempting to set a flier on the wall on fire. There are no suspects at this time.
