Honors College kicks off Star Lecture Series with Dorris Fields
The Honors College kicked off the 2016 Star Lecture series with Dr. Doris Fields. The first installment in the series was titled “A Well Lived Life: Improving race relations on campus, within the community and in workplace.” This lecture filled the Halle Library Auditorium with Honors college students along with students of Dr. Fields, to hear her enthusiastic perspective on learning about and approving race relations.
Protestors bring signs to Ypsi City Council meeting
Ypsilanti City Council held its regular meeting in the McKenny Ball room Tuesday, Oct. 20. About 28 protestors holding signs lined the back of the ballroom. Some of the signs read “danger police in area,” “justice delayed is justice denied,” “Black lives matter.” Student’s marched from Eastern Michigan University DPS to McKenny chanting “hey now hey now, we want freedom freedom... racist cops we don’t need them need them” “The fact this meeting is on campus is important it gives students a chance to have a voice, this needs to be talked about,” Shaina Johnson, senior, communications major said.
Echo continues the search for answers in the case of Sandra Bland
In lieu of a recent opinions column published online by Makayla Stevenson concerning the general lack of interest in the investigation of Sandra Bland’s death, medical examiner legal consultant, David Fisher, contacted The Eastern Echo and shared details into his investigation of the case that he will be presenting to Texas legislative this week. Fisher provided several documents including: The official Autopsy report, Texas Commission Law Enforcement personal information, custodial death report, and several letters about the legality of out of county autopsy.
EMU remembers freshman honors student
Tragically, Eastern Michigan University lost a student, Blaise Hebert, 19, Thursday, May 21. His death comes as a shock and was unexpected by those who knew him.
Regents appoint Kim Schatzel interim president starting July 7

NFL scouts come to EMU
Spring football practice continues at Eastern Michigan University, professional scouts stopped by to watch EMU seniors work out. A total of 18 scouts from the National Football League and Canadian Football League visited EMU for the event, which allowed the former Eagles to display their talents in a format that mirrors the NFL Scouting Combine.
