02414 -- Scott Stephenson Eastern Echo Scholarship:  This expendable scholarship is for the benefit of student(s) in the School of Communication, Media & Theater Arts in the College of Arts & Sciences.  It will be awarded to a full or part-time junior or senior EMU student majoring in journalism and working for the Eastern Echo.  The student should be working to self-finance their education and not be eligible for need-based grants.

Throughout the United States, how universities and schools will open in the fall has been a point of uncertainty since the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cessation of in-person classes in March. How to teach and house students, while adhering to physical distancing guidelines, has proven a logistical nightmare for universities. Health experts have questioned whether re-opening, even with adherence to physical distancing guidelines, is worth the potential health risks for both students and instructors.

Close to 500 people gathered in downtown Ypsilanti for a Black Lives Matter protest on Saturday, June 20. Held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., protestors met outside of the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave) before marching through the city.

President Donald Trump is expected to tour and speak at Ypsilanti's Ford Rawsonville Components Plant Thursday, May 21. The visit is part of the president's national tour to thank businesses who aided in the effort to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical equipment in the effort against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eastern Michigan University hoping to hold in-person classes in the fall

EMU president James Smith released a report on Thursday, May 7, announcing the university's plans to begin preparing for the 2020 fall semester. In the statement it was announced that EMU will begin to turn its attention to planning for the fall semester being in-person "in what can best be described as a 'new normal.'" According to Smith, the main priority for reopening is the "health, safety and well being of" of both students and staff.

EMU to sell Owen Building to private buyer, sale to be finalized at April 23 Board of Regents meeting

In an email addressed to EMU students, faculty, and staff, the Office of the President announced the sale of the Owen Building, currently home to EMU's College of Business, to a a private party. The sale is expected to be finalized April 23, 2020 during the university's Board of Regents meeting.

Eastern Michigan University instructor passes away due to complications from COVID-19

In an email on April 9, 2020 to Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and staff university president James Smith announced the death of EMU instructor and advisor Marilyn Horace-Moore. Horace-Moore passed away due to complications from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

It has now been over three weeks since Eastern Michigan University cancelled in-person classes due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic on March 12, 2020. Initially classes were cancelled through March 31, however in an email announcement on March 18, 2020, university president James Smith requested that online courses be extended until the end of the semester.

Accident Brief: Car flips just off-campus on Washtenaw and Oakwood
