Good riddance, Julea Ward By Jodi F. Bullock
In my Dec. 6 column, “Athletic funds could be used for academics,” I incorrectly used “Athletic Department” and “football program” interchangeably, as Eastern Michigan University athlete Katherine Anderson’s letter stated.
It’s time we re-examine Eastern Michigan University’s football program. Again. In a Dec. 3 front-page column, The Eastern Echo sports editor called for the firing of head coach Ron English. With an overall record of 10-38, I agree. However, I suggest the Board of Regents refrain from its usual knee-jerk reaction of addressing the football program’s failure by tossing more dollars at it.
I have a confession to make. While many Americans look forward to Black Friday shopping deals, I experience a moment of schadenfreud reading about people getting trampled and violent frenzies that break out.
Answer this question: Why was it important to know which presidential candidate was leading in the national polls on October 22? If you properly answered “It wasn’t” then you may move on to the next column. However, if your interest is sparked, continue reading.
When is the right time to invest in national infrastructure? Is it before a bridge collapses? Perhaps when the economy is down and an infusion of jobs is needed? What if the nation’s symbol for democracy – the Capitol – was literally falling down? How about then?
“While it’s not new, the 2009 ‘BlakRoc’ album by The Black Keys is still on my iPhone playlists and has one of the highest play counts of any album I own (and I have over 20,000 songs in my music library). Hip-hop producer Damon Dash, cofounder of Roc-A-Fella Records, initiated the recording project because he wanted to work with The Keys, so he brought hip-hop artist Jim Jones into the studio to record with them.
Have you ever tried enjoying a music show or movie in the theater only to find yourself distracted by the bright lights of people texting? I’ve had enough. Here’s a thought—turn your mobile devices off at venues and just enjoy the show.
Former President Bill Clinton might be the most likable, effective politician of our generation. His speech performance at last week’s Democratic National Convention made President Barack Obama’s seem mediocre.
Fall 2012 will see another wave of students entering another college semester. For some it will be their first. Incoming freshmen should ask themselves two questions: How will students and their parents pay for it? And is the four-year college track really the right one for them?
“Elbow.” Imagine being suspended from class for calling out a part of the human anatomy during an open discussion about the body.
Last week the New York Times ran two editorials calling attention to a new flood of secret money in politics and calling for the Internal Revenue Service to act. So what’s new about money corrupting our political system? Nothing. But it’s the way the money is being funneled that needs attention.
Remember that New Year’s resolution to lose weight? How’s the progress coming?
I observed two things while traveling the country by road last week. First, riding with the windows down while jamming Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird” still rocks. Second, last week’s radio waves were dominated by right-wing hate peddling yakkies drumming up anger over President Barack Obama’s assertion that he supported gay marriage.
Concealed weapons should be allowed on campus. There, I said it. After years of believing weapons should not be allowed on university property, I have flipped my position. I can no longer find a valid reason as to why law-abiding citizens who attend and work at Eastern Michigan University or any university campus should be left defenseless.
Answer this question: If you had to pay for college out-of-pocket as you go, would you still be attending right now?
Recently we learned Physical Plant Chief of Operations John Donegan purchased an antique phone booth for $2,000. I’ve seen some argue that haters and complainers should get over it, that students don’t have a role in what or how the university’s money is spent. After all, it’s the university’s money, right? Except that EMU was chided last month for relying too heavily on student tuition and fees for revenue.
As summer cranks up and we approach the middle year, it is easy to forget President Obama made a promise to draw down troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2011. It appears this will be another promise made to be broken.
Prepare to pay more for your education at EMU. When the Board of Regents meets on June 21, they will be voting to raise tuition. How much? We’ll see, but estimates say they need to cover a 15 percent cut in state funding, which is about $11.5 million.
