Come Feb. 2 we will be awaiting the famous Punxsutawney Phil to climb out of his burrow and forecast our weather for the last few months of winter. Legend says that if Phil sees his shadow America will have to endure winter weather for six more weeks. However, if Phil does not see his shadow we will enjoy warmer temperatures and an early spring.
The LSA hosted their first Quinceañera last Friday.
One might have found that they were mystified by the sounds of Domonique Williams-De Hoyos, EMU senior, singing “The Reason Why The Doves Cry” when headed to the Student Center Ballroom last Friday night. Not only was the crowd at a complete standstill, but his voice carried down the hallway, a welcoming sound to those coming to the Latino Student Association’s (LSA) first Quinceañera.
This Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Ballroom B of the Student Center, Eastern Michigan University’s Latino Student Association (LSA) will be holding their first Quinceañera. A traditional Quinceañera celebrates a Latina girl’s fifteenth birthday, but the LSA decided to hold the event as more of an educational and social tool to get more students involved.
There is beauty in the academic struggle. The long-term reward of short-term diligence completely justifies the scholastic grind. However, this paradox can wear down even the strongest of students, so here is a list of elements that have helped me bounce back and maintain academically.
The Ark Coffeehouse is one of the reasons so many well-known musicians choose to stop in Ann Arbor on their tours. The venue, which had its 50th anniversary earlier this year, seats about 400 and is one of the most popular intimate listening rooms in the area.
Whether it’s layering up for the harsh winds or dressing down for those mild nights, Eastern Michigan University students have shown what it takes to survive Michigan’s changing seasons in style.
The drummer’s light tap and the vocalist’s melodic tone complimented the steady murmur of conversation. The lights were dimmed. The atmosphere was relaxed and the light refreshments, coupled with the friendly catering staff, added to the ambience.
The Eastern Michigan University Student Center will be hosting a water drive for Flint citizens. If students or local residents would like to participate, bring bottled water to the Student Center on Monday, January 25 from 3-5 p.m.
My significant other and I made our way over to the Rave Cinema on Carpenter Road, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m., to check out Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest movie, The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
