A new state-wide smoking law will take effect May 1, banning smoking in bars, restaurants, hotels and private clubs that have a food license.

Certain exemptions apply to the law, such as being a cigar bar or tobacco specialty shop, but a press release from the Washtenaw County Public Health Department said these establishments will have to apply for exemptions. Native American casinos, which aren’t covered by state law, are automatically exempt.

The Washtenaw County Clean Indoor Air Regulation, passed in 2003, already prohibited smoking in public places and private workplaces, but it did not include bars and restaurants.
