The Eastern Echo is accepting applications for the roles of editor in chief and managing editor for the 2024-25 production year. The job begins at the start of the summer semester, after previous editors graduate, and continues for a full year (summer, fall and winter semesters).

Both roles involve 20 hours of work weekly as leaders of the student media staff, which produces a printed newspaper and operates a 24/7 news website. Both positions receive a salary. The editors report directly to the student media director.

All applicants for these positions must be full-time students and maintain full-time status while serving in the roles of managing editor and editor in chief.

All applicants must have a minimum of two semesters of satisfactory performance previously working for The Eastern Echo.

Applicants will be interviewed by the student media director and members of the Student Media Advisory Board.

Other qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of AP Style;
  • A history of demonstrated, excellent organizational skills;
  • A history of demonstrated excellent communication skills;
  • And demonstrated good news judgment.

Applications must include: a resume that includes notations of work history with The Eastern Echo; proof of full-time student status; and a cover letter explaining why the candidate wants to serve in this role and the goals they would set as leaders of the student media staff. 

Applicants may be asked to complete an AP Style test.

All applications will be reviewed by the student media advisor and then presented to the Eastern Michigan University Student Media Board. Candidates who are finalists for the jobs will be asked to interview with the student media board.
