The 15th Annual Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival is coming to Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park, July 27 from 5-9 p.m. and July 28 from 1-6 p.m., and will feature about 450 locally crafted beers from more than 60 Michigan breweries and live music from a variety of local bands.

The Shadow Art Fair, a juried event for local artists to exhibit and sell their works, is returning to Ypsilanti’s Corner Brewery July 21 from noon until midnight, and will feature local live music, a specially-crafted Shadow Brew, short films will be shown in the beer garden courtesy of the Ann Arbor Film Festival and several comedians will perform between musical acts.

Eastern Michigan University continued negotiating last week with two of its eight labor unions: the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors which is representing faculty members, and the clerical staff UAW 1975 union. The university already reached an agreement with the police officers’ union on June 26.

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents adopted a 2012-13 budget June 19 that includes a general fund operating budget of $290.6 million, an auxiliary activities operating budget of $42.1 million and a capital budget of $21.7 million. The board also received a three year capital plan.

Eastern Michigan University’s Autism Collaboration Center was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the state of Michigan. The grant was included in next year’s state budget for the Michigan Department of Community Health, which was passed by the Michigan State House and the Senate, but is still waiting to be approved by Governor Rick Snyder.

Eastern Michigan University Professor Susan Moeller confirmed, to The Eastern Echo June 11, she has decided to run for the seat on Ypsilanti City Council currently held by Michael Bodary in the Second Ward. Bodary announced in May that he would not seek re-election, citing the amount of time required to serve on council, especially considering the city’s current and continuing financial difficulties.

Lydia Gomez-Diaz finished her freshman year at Eastern Michigan University, despite having had a hard time adjusting to changes in her life after moving to the U.S. from Spain 10 months ago, but Gomez-Diaz found a home on the EMU women’s track and field team.

Tristan Karez Simmons, an 18-year-old Inkster resident, was arraigned June 6 on charges, of the false report or threat of a bomb or harmful device, for a bomb threat to Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center. The previous day, a secretary at Ypsilanti High School had received two separate phone calls from the same person who said a bomb was going to go off at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. that night.

This recipe actually started as a Rice Krispies Treat s’more idea. I’m not the biggest fan of s’mores, so I decided to make it into something I do like. The resulting recipe tastes like what would happen if a Nestle Crunch Bar, a jar of Nutella and a Rice Krispies Treat had a baby… a delicious, crispy, chocolaty baby.

Eastern Michigan University’s Center for the Study of Equality and Human Rights, whose mission statement is the advancement and promotion of equality and human rights with a primary focus on eliminating homophobia, appointed EMU Professor of communication Michael Tew as the center’s new director, said the center’s current Director Dennis Patrick.
