(01/27/16 1:31pm)

The Ark Coffeehouse is one of the reasons so many well-known musicians choose to stop in Ann Arbor on their tours. The venue, which had its 50th anniversary earlier this year, seats about 400 and is one of the most popular intimate listening rooms in the area.

Broadway's "Hamilton" is setting records, breaking down barriers in theater

(11/18/15 1:48pm)

It’s rare that a Broadway musical makes a splash in the pop culture world outside the theatre community. But this week, a Broadway musical’s cast recording did something no other has ever done: it reached number 1 on the rap charts.

'Little Shop of Horrors' exceeds expectations

(10/28/15 8:27am)

In my three years at EMU, I’ve seen some wonderful theatre. But, the current main stage production, “Little Shop of Horrors,” is the best show I’ve seen here, hands down.

(10/18/15 3:36am)

The leaves are turning bright colors, a chill is in the air and creepy decorations of ghosts and goblins are showing up on many neighborhood lawns. To help get us into the Halloween spirit, Eastern Michigan University Theatre will produce “Little Shop of Horrors,” opening Thursday.

Purple Rose Theater produces another high quality performance

(09/30/15 12:10pm)

Whenever I see a play at Chelsea’s Purple Rose Theatre, I can count on the acting, sets, costumes and everything about the production to be the highest quality. I can also usually count on the plays themselves to be good, but those are sometimes not as spectacular as the rest of the offering.

EMU Drama professor teaches and performs with great success

(08/31/15 6:30pm)

There’s a saying, “Those who can’t do, teach.” However, we know that the two are not mutually exclusive. EMU Drama professor Jenny Koppera does and teaches—with great success.

Encore Theatre's production of South Pacific gives a fresh approach

(06/14/15 11:02am)

The city of Dexter’s Encore Theatre has had a history of putting on enjoyable musical theatre for eight years now and its latest offering, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, South Pacific, follows that tradition. The musical, set during World War II, tells the story of young Navy nurse, Nellie Forbush, and the French planter, Emile de Becque, with whom she falls in love. Emile, it turns out, has some secrets that may crush their chance at happiness.

Musicals that need their own movies

(03/18/15 6:25am)

Broadway to big screen seems to be a trend in show business. In the last ten years, we have seen Hollywood adaptations of “Sweeney Todd” starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, “Les Miserábles” starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, “Into the Woods” starring Meryl Streep and “The Last Five Years” starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

'Opera On Tap' comes to Sidetrack

(03/01/15 4:00am)

When you think of opera, you might think of extravagant halls and people wearing expensive clothing and jewelry. You may also think of opera, like classical music, as a lofty, intellectual affair. The last thing you would associate with opera is a bar with great burgers and other pub food.
