Matt On Music: Shakira and Kylie Minogue

·

Here are two pop albums. Shakira’s self-titled album, which shows her dominating at ballads, and Kylie Minogue’s “Kiss Me Once,” a mostly dull dance-pop album.

'Kapow!' pays homage to comic book fans

·

Kapow! Comics Exhibit at Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center is back for another round, and this time is even better than the last. This gallery of student work has been occurring every few years since 2001, and each time churns out more talent than the previous exhibition.

Food Scoop: Chocolate Mousse

·

I’ve been thinking about chocolate mousse for a while. It’s so classically elegant, and looks gorgeous when it is served in a goblet or glass dish. Not only does it look good, but the smooth chocolate taste is wonderful. I thought it might be about time to try it myself, rather than looking at dessert menus at restaurants.

EMU to honor King of Pop

·

On Wednesday, April 2, the Student Center Auditorium will be filled with song and dance honoring the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson. Two timeslots are being offered for the show, 5:30-7 p.m. and 8-9:30 p.m., to assure enough seating for everyone who wishes to attend.

Food Scoop: Rhubarb pie

·

I like to think that pie holds a special spot in every American heart. It’s strewn about our popular ideas of American history, from Thanksgiving tables to “Little House on the Prairie” scenes. We reach for disposable pie tins and prepared piecrusts in the grocery store, but pies baked like that are a far cry from pies baked a hundred years ago.

Katie's Craft Corner: New Crafts

·

Most of the common hobbies today—sewing, crocheting, candlemaking, etc—have been around as long as people have needed things like clothes and candles. While these are fun and useful, they’re not particularly groundbreaking. With this being the generation of internet sharing, a few cool and unusual twists on everyday crafts have come into being.

Matt On Music: Tokyo Police Club and Foster the People

·

It’s an indie-rock day. Tokyo Police Club generally produces a few gems per album, but they aren’t hugely consistent. Still, the gems they write hit harder than you would expect. Foster the People can write decent tunes when they feel like it, but their lyrics too often bring front man Mark Foster’s pretentions front and center.

Design Expo shows off talents of EMU students

·

The scientific and artistic prowess of Eastern Michigan University students is often underestimated. Thursday night’s “Crossing Lines” Design Expo, part of the 2014 Undergraduate Symposium, proved EMU students have some serious creative skills. The design expo featured a plethora of works, which showcased EMU students’ innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.

Event celebrates roles of female nurses in the Civil War

·

On Monday, March 24, an event called “Clara Barton and Susie King Taylor: Pioneering Nurses on the Civil War Battlefield” was held in room 219 at Pray-Harrold. Matt On Music: The Hold Steady and Withered Hand

·

Singer-songwriter Dan Willson (stage name Withered Hand) and The Hold Steady are similar in quite a few ways. Willson was raised a Jehovah’s Witness while The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn was raised Catholic and in both cases, spirituality and religion are recurring themes in their lyrics. They also write catchy tunes, complete with “oh”s and “la”s, to go along with their masterful lyricism.

Know the signs of cheating

·

Selfishness is the factor that sets the timer to a huge bomb in an intimate relationship. Someone cheating on their significant other can bring a tremendous amount of intensity and distrust into a relationship.

Katie's Craft Corner: Natural skincare products

·

With the breezes starting to blow a little warmer, heavy sweaters and foot-encasing boots are starting to be relinquished, revealing dry, winter-damaged skin. While there are lots of products out there at various price points to remedy flaking, parched skin, making your own is simple and has many added benefits.

Matt on Music: a decent punk band and a horribly mediocre one

·

As the Buzzcocks once sang, noise annoys. When it’s good, it annoys in a beautifully powerful way, one that you can latch onto regardless of whether you’re sad, angry or joyful. When it’s bad, noise just annoys. But it still gets an 8.6 from Pitchfork.

The pair talk about their semesters and the final big events of the year, the Eastern Echo Media Gala and Rock The Patio. The latter playing host to Eagletainment's very own Queso Tone as a musical performance, with the shows closing act Anthony Roperti a former guest of the show.
