Roma Bakery affordable, perfect for the college student budget

·

The wonderful aroma of baking pepperoni rolls, za’atar and manaeesh freshly baking is the first thing you’ll smell at Roma Bakery. Ameer Nemer, manager of Roma Bakery, says that his family has owned a bakery in Dearborn for over 10 years and, just two years ago, they decided to expand to Ann Arbor.

Food Scoop: Potato Leek Soup

·

This is what late morning on a Saturday looks like: I’m standing in my kitchen with the radio tuned to “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” which NPR bills as an, “oddly informative quiz show.” My hair is a tangled mess, and there’s a mostly-empty cup of hot chocolate getting chilly at my elbow. I’m peeling potatoes, half-listening to Peter Segal’s voice on the radio and thinking ahead to the potato leek soup I’m having for lunch.

Matt On Music: Neneh Cherry/Pharrell Williams

·

Neneh Cherry’s new album “Blank Project” contains strong tracks that greatly benefit from their production. Coming off of his success with guest appearances on “Get Lucky” and “Blurred Lines,” Pharrell Williams’ album “G I R L” offers merely decent songs that are made incredibly fun by his own production.

Katie's Craft Corner: Craft Organization

·

This past week, I was gifted with an entire storage system for all my knitting supplies and yarn, complete with bins, boxes, bags and a cubbyhole shelving unit to hold it all. While taking tangled skeins and mismatched needles out of their random plastic bins and tote bags, I’m reminded of why organizing your supplies is so important, no matter your craft.

Ypsilanti Art Incubator hosts PechaKucha

·

The Ypsilanti Art Incubator of 76 Huron Street held a PechaKucha Friday, as it does the first Friday of every month. PechaKucha is a Japanese phrase meaning “chit-chat.” Developed by a Tokyo-based architecture firm in the 1960s, it’s a rapid-fire format for giving talks in public that are entertaining and efficient. Being adaptable to almost every format, the Ypsilanti Art Incubator decided to use it to have five artists from the Ypsilanti area, most of whom are current or former Eastern Michigan University art majors, present and talk about their art.

Matt On Music: St. Vincent and Beck, Rick Ross and Schoolboy Q

·

Here’s a two-parter. First up, two indie records. St. Vincent’s new album has gotten almost unanimous praise, with an outstanding 90/100 on Metacritic. After a couple years of agreeing with the consensus, this furthers my hunch that I’m going to very likely be contrary to it this year. And Beck’s “Morning Phase” which, like the 2002 album it’s a companion piece to, has people divided over whether it’s a masterpiece or a failure.

'Live Your Dream' encourages students to do what they love

·

Faye Valtadoros, JETAA President, shared her reason for bringing the film to EMU, saying “it is an important story for everyone to hear,” and that it brings “the unknown to the public’s knowledge.” She knew once she saw it at a national conference that she had to bring it back to EMU.

International Student Association to present Colors in Harmony

·

Colors in Harmony began in 1999 as a way for students to showcase their talents and culture through performances and a fashion show. Performances, which will include traditional dances, fashion and music, will be as diverse and rich with culture as the students are. This event is a way to learn about the backgrounds and cultures of students that make EMU’s campus unique.

Food Scoop: Blueberry Coffee Cake

·

Yesterday, I baked blueberry coffee cake for two reasons – I really like coffee cake, and I really love butter. Butter isn’t trendy. People don’t often write about butter. Seriously, run a Google search on it. People write about peanut butter, or stabbing people with butter knives, or wondering how people in France manage to eat butter and stay skinny. The phrase “bread and butter” pops up over and over, with two meanings. One, a pair that goes together perfectly. Two, it’s a daily occurrence, commonplace and maybe a little bit boring.

Events kick off Women's History Month

·

Women’s History Month 2014 got off to a great start at Eastern Michigan University, beginning with two events that were similar in structure, but which differed heavily in perspective. The first event, held on Monday, March 3, was a screening of a portion of the film “Half the Sky,” followed by a panel discussion.

Food Scoop: Traveling

·

I love traveling, although I’m less interested in sight-seeing than in those I’m visiting. I like to ask them to show me their town. When people show me why they love a place, it’s easier for me to love it, too. Almost invariably, this means eating out at their favorite restaurants.

After one of the harshest winters Michigan has ever seen, people are getting very anxious to shed their winter coats, layers and snow boots. As soon as it starts to warm up this spring, there are many trends, both old and new, that we can expect to see this season.

Katie's Craft Corner: One-Yard Wonders review

·

When just beginning to sew or simply looking for easy projects, one yard of inexpensive cotton blend fabric is the ultimate versatile canvas. While I could compile a small list of sewing projects from my personal experiences, encouraging you to invest in the well-written, charming book “One-Yard Wonders” is more worthwhile.

Food Scoop: Rhubarb fool

·

Rhubarb is a strange food. Really strange, I mean, because we can only eat the ruby red stalks. The giant leaves of the plant are poisonous. It’s difficult to picture the circumstance in which someone looked at a rhubarb plant and said, “Well the leaves will kill you, but maybe the stalks won’t.”

Minority Women in Leadership's Hair Show brings the circus to town

·

Tightropes, clowns and magicians were featured at Minority Women in Leadership’s third annual Hair Show on Monday in the Student Center Ballroom. The student organization recruited the top hair stylists from the Eastern Michigan University student body to show off their skills in the show. The theme was the circus, and each stylist was critiqued on creativity, make-up and the overall performance. The creativity and enthusiasm of the models helped to bring the stylist’s hair designs to life.

Matt On Music: Phantogram and Planningtorock

·

I’ve been excited for Phantogram’s album since I heard their beautiful single, “Nothing But Trouble,” last month. The song, which sounded like an electronic remake of Arcade Fire’s “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains),” made me excited to hear the band’s other work. The album didn’t disappoint.

Julez DeShetler and Queso Tone catch up after a short hiatus due to illness and someones birthday. The pair talk about their semesters and the final big events of the year, the Eastern Echo Media Gala and Rock The Patio. The latter playing host to Eagletainment's very own Queso Tone as a musical performance, with the shows closing act Anthony Roperti a former guest of the show.
