EMU appoints new general counsel

Eastern Michigan University has hired Gloria Hage as general counsel to manage its legal affairs.

Her position, pending approval by the Board of Regents, will be effective March 1.

Hage’s salary will be $230,000 a year.

Hage previously was the associate vice president and deputy general counsel in the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel at the University of Michigan.

At U of M, Hage oversaw the legal affairs for the university, which included regional and off-site facilities, the Health System campus and matters that affected various colleges at the university.

Prior to U of M, Hage was an associate attorney at Butzel Long.

Hage received her juris doctorate from the University of Michigan.

Ken McKanders, EMU’s general counsel since 1987, announced in November that he would be leaving effective Feb. 28 to pursue other opportunities.

The EMU Executive Council, consisting of presidential cabinet members and top EMU administrators, interviewed potential candidates for the position.

President Sue Martin said Hage’s experience and wealth of knowledge made her stand out.

“Gloria has an excellent reputation,” Martin said. “She has a breadth of experience and she will bring expertise to us. To not only handle our legal matters, but be proactive in advising us on how to conduct our affairs in the best way that we can to serve our students.”
