Music, food and activities brought students out to Eastern Michigan University’s TRUEMU Homecoming Kick Off Campus Bash Sept. 30. The carnival-like event took place in front of Buell Hall and offered obstacle courses, football, basketball and baseball games set up to keep the crowd occupied and having fun.
The food line was extensive as students waited in line for the wonderful array of snacks such as popcorn, nachos, pretzels and cotton candy. The energy was fun and you could feel that people were having a good time.
“It looked exciting from outside my window,” EMU freshman Maxine McLeish said when asked what made her attend the Homecoming kick off bash.
Shirts were being sold but there were also free shirts stating “I Am RHA” (Residence Hall Association). Free bags were being passed out to students during the event and we all know that nothing beats free stuff. There were volunteers giving students the chance to register to vote in the upcoming election. EMU cheerleaders were also roaming around passing out free posters with information about upcoming Homecoming events.
Students were also excited about the Saturday, Oct. 6 Homecoming football game against Kent State.
Freshman Chris Green said, “Yes, I’m going to the Homecoming game, but I know we will lose.”
The deejay providing the music was epic, keeping the crowd on their feet and dancing. The music choices were good at keeping the students smiling and having a good time. Even I had to start dancing when the song “Gangnam Style” came on. The crowd was just buzzing with activity.
Freshman Deshawna Cook said, “I came because I want to make friends, see who’s out here and all the free snacks.”
The carnival was such a hit that it went past the 8 p.m. end time and continued on into the night. Students were excited to have something to do on a Sunday night.
“It’s a lot of fun and it’s nice that it’s on a Sunday because normally there’s nothing to do here,” freshman Michael Cunningham said.
The Homecoming kick off bash was a success that led to many excited students who were glad they had attended the event. If you are a student around campus and your looking for some fun, make sure to head out to the upcoming Homecoming events and make the best of your college experience by being involved.
