Graduate school to host open house on Saturday

Eastern Michigan University will be holding an open house Saturday for the EMU Graduate School in the Student Center ballroom from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Undergrads, recent grads and community members will be able to explore more than 180 programs, including graduate degrees and certificates among the various master’s and doctoral programs.

Prospective students will have the chance to meet with various academic departments and representatives from all of EMU’s five colleges. At the fair, students can talk with representatives from their preferred college to gain a better understanding about EMU’s programs. Students also have the option of receiving further contact information for their faculty advisers in their specific program of interest. Also, prospective students have the opportunity to meet with faculty members from EMU’s doctoral and cohort programs.

Cost-conscious students will have the opportunity to meet with Financial Aid representatives, who will be conducting sessions on scholarships and graduate financial aid. Representatives will have information for students on graduate assistantships and doctoral fellowships. Since EMU provides over $4 million for graduate assistantships, prospective students can easily search for their college, program and opportunities to help fund their education.

As an added bonus, attending the open house offers the opportunity to also apply for admission to the graduate school. While there are no onsite admissions, prospective students can waive the first application fee of $35 to whichever program they apply to. In addition to this, prospective students can also enter a drawing totaling a $1,500 award (or three credit hours of graduate in-state tuition).

Susan Anderson, the administrative manager at EMU’s graduate school urges students to attend the free open house.

“The event is a quick and easy way for prospective graduate students to visit the campus, meet faculty and get advice about degree programs, and to learn about financial assistance for graduate school,” Anderson said. “We usually have 200 or so students at the open house events and we would love to have more current EMU students continue on with graduate education.”

Currently, EMU has roughly 5,000 graduate students and a community of world-renowned scholars. Graduate opportunities at EMU allow students to gain an academic education including research opportunities, assistantships, mentoring and strong intellectual relationships. Graduate programs also offer the flexibility of full-time or part-time enrollment, and evening classes for students who have jobs outside of the EMU community.
