Men's track & field sets the pace at Notre Dame

Eastern Michigan University’s men’s track and field team sprinted to a victory Saturday, winning the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. EMU defeated five other teams in the victory scoring 120 points to Michigan State’s 112, Indiana State’s 80, Purdue’s 70, Notre Dame’s 57 and DePaul’s 26.

“This is certainly a nice win for us,” coach John Goodridge said in a statement. “I'm pleased with our overall competitive effort, but we have room for improvement – the team result was not settled until the end. We had a good lead with a few remaining events and Michigan State came back at us. It took the final event, the 4x400m relay, to secure the team victory.”

Sophomore Tyler Brown stood out Saturday by posting the second-fastest 400m time in EMU history, winning the race in 46.26 seconds. Brown, a two-time Mid-American Conference champion in the 400m, distanced the field by over a second and a half.

Brown was not the only Eagle to rewrite EMU’s record books Saturday as junior Anthony Jones continued his dominance in the weight throw. Jones broke his previous school best throw of 20.25 meters/66 feet 5.25-inches set Jan. 9, with a throw of 20.75 meters/68 feet 1-inch. Though Jones throw put him first in EMU history, it only placed him second at Notre Dame, being beaten by Purdue’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s track record throw of 24.04 meters.

Donald Scott won both the long jump and triple jump competitions for the Eagles and Harry Dixon took first place in the 300m. EMU’s 4x400m Relay team of Jeff Elam, Cameron Bolton Mason Waynes and Tyler Brown also placed first.

EMU will face MAC foe, Central Michigan University, next on Jan. 30.
