Eastern Michigan University’s Athletic Department welcomed a new face to the staff this past Wednesday, Oct. 4, as it was announced by Associate Athletics Director of Compliance Matthew Jakobsze that Sean McCarthy was named Assistant Director of Compliance.
Prior to joining EMU, McCarthy served a year as compliance coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University. During his time there, he was responsible for department-wide recruiting, as well as researching, compiling, and drafting legislative relief waivers and interpretation requests.
Before his stint in Richmond, McCarthy interned at Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois University. McCarthy also interned at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the summer of 2014, helping to audit official visits conducted by athletic department teams and coaches.
“We are excited to welcome Sean to our staff and to the EMU Athletics Community,” Jakobsze said. “Sean comes to us highly recommended, with a wealth of education and experience at multiple levels. We are confident that he will advance Eastern Michigan’s long-standing commitment to service and integrity.”
The Aurora, Nebraska native earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Iowa State University before picking up his juris doctorate from Marquette University Law School in 2016.
As a member of the compliance staff, McCarthy will oversee initial, continuing, and transfer eligibility, admissions, official and unofficial visits, camps, clinics, as well as other aspects of recruiting.
“I am excited for the opportunity to join the EMU Athletics Department as the Assistant Director of Compliance,” McCarthy added. “This position presented an incredible opportunity for me to grow in my compliance career. Matt, and his office were highly recommended to me through my time at NIU. I'm looking forward to working with all of our coaches, student-athletes, and administrators going forward.”
