A Fall From Grace Poster

Review: "A Fall from Grace" delivers the usual Tyler Perry twists

Tyler Perry brings his talents to Netflix with his scandalously shocking new film.

"A Fall from Grace" is an American Thriller written and produced exclusively for Netflix by Tyler Perry. The film stars Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, and Bresha Webb and tells the classic story of “Everything that glitters is not gold."

The film is centered around Grace Waters, played by Crystal Fox, who is being convicted for the murder of her husband and cannot afford a lawyer. Therefore, she is given one: Jasmine Bryant, a known plea taker, played by Bresha Webb. Most do not expect her to actually take on Grace’s case. It isn't until Jasmine hears Grace’s bizarre story that a fire sparks in her to help set this woman free. The film does a very good job at keeping viewers interested in the story. You begin to find yourself invested in Grace’s story, anxious to figure out where things went wrong with her and Mr. Right.

Mehcad Brooks also stars in the film, playing Shannon Delong - who goes from prince to conniving thief in the blink of an eye. Grace first meets Shannon at an art show. From there, he sets his sights on her, wooing her into believing that he is the man of her dreams. Grace, being a divorced older woman, falls vulnerable to the tricks of Shannon and falls right into his trap. After they marry, Shannon shows his true colors, from stealing thousands dollars from Grace to even sleeping with someone in her house and telling the girl that Grace is his mother. So, in Tyler Perry fashion, this movie takes some pretty dark turns... but is it necessary for the storytelling?

Absolutely. As the film goes on, it is great to see the progress in Bresha Webb's character from a submissive lawyer to an actual fighter.

Cicely Tyson also stars in the film, adding an even more suspenseful vibe to its aesthetic with her wonderful talent and helping to reveal the insane twist at the end. Phylicia Rashad plays Sarah Miller, Grace’s best friend throughout all of this, who happens to contribute more to the plot than you would think.

Although the film’s acting can get a bit choppy here and there, the point of the film came across well - and so did the intensity. This made the watching experience even better, especially when you get to the climactic ending. Tyler Perry also stars in the film in a small role. His character tries to light a match under Jasmine after witnessing her become the lackluster lawyer she has become. Overall it served as an okay film with great performances from individual actors and a compelling story. It was enough to witness "A Fall From Grace."

I give “A Fall From Grace” 3.5 out of 5 Swoops.
