EMU baseball loses 3 games in weekend series at Bowling Green

The Eastern Michigan University baseball program dropped all three games of a weekend series against the Bowling Green Falcons by scores of 11-4, and 10-9 Saturday, and 8-4 Sunday, April 26 and 27th at Stellar Field.

The losses drop Eastern Michigan’s record to 17-20 (9-12 MAC) on the season. Highlights from the series included Giano Zuccaro (Middleburg Heights) getting three hits, including one home run, one double, and one single, leaving him a tiple shy of the cycle. He also had a walk, which helped him reach four times throughout the contest.

The Eagles only had three hits outside of Zuccaro, including a two-hit effort from Connor Walsh (Mattawn, Mich.), who had a single and double for Eastern Michigan.

In the second game, Eastern Michigan was better offensively but still lost the game 10-9. They outhit the Falcons 14-12. Three players had multi-hit efforts for the Eagles, including Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio), Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa), and Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.), with Vance having three of them while Hugo and Stecko had two.

Despite the team getting 14 hits, only two were for extra bases, with Stecko hitting a home run and Hugo getting a triple. Michael Pfeiffer (Brownsboro, Ala.) threw a season-best out of the bullpen with 4 ⅔ innings of work playing the ground-ball game, with no strikeouts, while allowing just one hit.

In game three, the Eagles suffered the same kind of loss they did in game one. They were outhit 14-8 and lost the game from the beginning. The Eagles had two players get multiple hits, including Stecko and Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa.), with Zirwas getting two hits and also having two walks to add to his total.

The pitching in the finale was the best it was all weekend. They struck out 11 batters with Tyler Kapa (Waterford, Mich.) having seven. He now has a combined 18 strikeouts over his last two outings, which total 10.1 innings of work.

Of the three games, Eastern was competitive in two of them. In the first game it was 3-3 after the top half of the fourth inning. After this, the Falcons came alive for the remainder of the contest. They outscored Eastern Michigan 8-1 over the next 5 ½ innings which included just singles and advancing runners as the Eagles had trouble getting outs.

Game two was the other contest in which the Eagles were competitive in, as they had a 9-5 lead after the top half of the eighth inning. But their bullpen allowed five runs in the eighth and the ninth as they lost the game. The Falcons only had a four-run first inning before they scored six runs in the last three innings of the game.

The third game was out of control from Eastern Michigan at the start, as they allowed three runs in the first inning and they went down 4-0 after two. After trailing 7-1 through six innings, the Eagles were able to add three extra runs to make the score 8-4 as Bowling Green added an insurance run.

As a result of the losses, it marks just third time in 2025 that Eastern Michigan has been swept by an opponent in a three-game series. This also happened the opening series against Pitt from February 14th-16th, and against Ball State, April 4th and 6th. They have just three Mid-American Conference series left in the regular season.
