Michigan Works! Southeast Community Outreach — Jan. 9, 2026

Feeling stressed about landing a job after college? Attending this event might be helpful. A representative from Michigan Works! Southeast will be at the Michigan Avenue branch of the Ypsilanti District Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, to answer questions, provide assistance with job leads, and offer guidance about employment and different career paths.

No registration is required for this free event, and it is open to anyone 14 years of age and older. It will take place in Meeting Room 1, and the Michigan Avenue branch of the YDL is at 229 W. Michigan Ave.

For those unable to attend this session, it will be offered again Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at the same time and place.

Time Travel Half-Marathon (and 5K/10K) — Jan. 10, 2026

Looking for a way to get moving? Look no further! On Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, Bodies Race Company will present the Time Travel Half-Marathon, along with 5K and 10K races, at Rolling Hills Waterpark in Ypsilanti.  

From 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., participants can pick up their packets. Then, the half marathon, 5K and 10K will begin at 9 a.m.

This event also features a kids' dash for children 10 and under. The kids' dash begins at 9 a.m. and is not timed. Participants should meet at the start line at 8:55 a.m., where they will be walked to the starting area.

For those who cannot make it to a race in person but would still like to participate, there is a virtual option. Participants in the virtual race can run anytime, anywhere, and upload their times starting the day of the event on the results page. 

Registration costs vary depending on which race participants choose, and more information is available on the RunSignup website. Registration for all races, including the virtual race, comes with swag.

Writing Oneself: Letters and Emotions (YpsiWrites) — Jan. 10. 2026

In this YpsiWrites workshop hosted by clinical social worker and poet David Boeving at the Michigan Avenue branch of the Ypsilanti District Library, participants will learn how they can explore and make use of their emotions by writing letters. Those letters may be to themselves, a loved one or even an emotion.

The workshop will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Meeting Room 2 of the Michigan Avenue branch of the YDL. It is free and open to anyone 15 and older. Registration on the YDL's website is required.

Stinkin' Good Comedy Music Night — Jan. 10, 2026

In need of a good laugh? Try attending the Stinkin' Good Comedy Music Night at Ypsilanti bar and performance venue Ziggy's on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026. This event will feature live comedy and live music. 

The show starts at 8 p.m., and featured comedians include Brad Wenzel, Brett Hayden, Patty Rooney and Jacob Russell, as well as host Alex Bradley. Live music acts include artist Philo-San from Detroit and Ann Arbor band The Missing Cats.

The Ladies of Soul: A Take Note Concert — Jan. 11, 2026

A musical and spoken word concert will take place at the Whittaker branch of the Ypsilanti District Library on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026. The Sean Dobbins Ensemble and featured artist Athena Johnson will present "The Ladies of Soul," a concert celebrating women's contributions before and during the Civil Rights era. 

The concert will take place in the Whittaker Community Room from 2-3:30 p.m. It is free and open to everyone, and no registration is required. The Whittaker branch of the YDL is at 5577 Whittaker Road.

Allie Beecher

Allie Beecher uses she/her pronouns, and has worked for The Eastern Echo since August 2024. She started as a copy editor, then moved to Copy Desk Chief in the 2025 summer semester. Beecher is a junior double majoring in Business and Public Relations. 

Her job entails supervising The Echo’s copy editing team, ensuring all the content is error-free, and reviewing all work to make sure it follows AP style guidelines. For her, the best part is being able to use her skills to make a difference in the EMU and Ypsilanti community.
