Mens Baseball 3/25/23

The Eastern Michigan University baseball program traveled to Muncie, Indiana, for a high-stakes three-game road series against the Ball State University Cardinals from March 13 to March 15, 2026. This series, hosted at Shebek Stadium, proved to be a significant challenge for the Eagles, who ultimately concluded the weekend with an 0-3 record after failing to outperform their hosts across all three contests. While the final results were not in their favor, the series featured several explosive offensive displays and record-breaking individual performances from the Eastern Michigan roster.

Game one

The opening match of the series on March 13 saw a massive offensive surge from the Eastern Michigan lineup, which managed to rack up an impressive 12 runs in just the first four innings of play. A major portion of this production occurred during a dominant second inning, where the Eagles plated six runs to establish their presence early in the game. Offensive contributions were widespread during this period, with Nathan Borchardt, Devan Zirwas, and Ty Stecko among the players credited with RBIs during the initial scoring barrage. The momentum continued through the fourth inning, bolstered by a powerful home run off the bat of Ben Schechterman, which helped Eastern Michigan maintain a 12-9 lead as the middle portion of the game approached.

However, this scoring streak reached an abrupt conclusion as the fifth inning began. From the fifth through the eighth innings, the Ball State Cardinals completely seized control of the game’s momentum, outscoring the Eagles 8-0 to take a 17-12 lead by the start of the final frame. Eastern Michigan’s only response in the top of the ninth was a lone solo home run by Tristan Crane, but the effort was ultimately insufficient to overcome the significant deficit. The Eagles were unable to regain their earlier momentum, and the first game of the series concluded with a high-scoring 17-13 victory for Ball State.

Game two

The second game of the series on March 14 offered a much tighter contest in the early stages, though Eastern Michigan once again faced a disappointing outcome with a 9-4 loss. The Eagles were the first to find the scoreboard in the opening inning after Drew Jones connected on a single to left field, driving in teammates Nathan Borchardt and Devan Zirwas for an early lead. While Ball State’s Brayden Huebner responded quickly with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, Eastern Michigan managed to regain the lead in the fourth inning. This lead change came courtesy of Ty Stecko, who hit a single up the middle to bring Tristan Crane home, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Eagles.

The definitive turning point of the game occurred in the fifth inning when the Ball State offense erupted for six runs. The centerpiece of this rally was a grand slam hit to left field by Ryan Muizelaar, which effectively placed the Cardinals in firm control of the game. Although John Hale attempted to spark a late comeback with a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, it marked the final score of the day for Eastern Michigan. The Eagles fell to a 0-2 deficit in the series following the 9-4 finish.

Game three

In the series finale on March 15, the Eagles demonstrated continued resilience at the plate, starting strong in the first inning. Ty Stecko initiated the scoring with a double down the right-field line to bring Nathan Borchardt home, followed by an RBI single from Devan Zirwas that scored Stecko and gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. The Eagles remained aggressive throughout the contest; after falling behind, they tied the score in the fourth inning when Nick Weaver launched a two-run home run to left-center. Zirwas later reclaimed the lead for Eastern Michigan in that same inning with an RBI single through the right side, making the score 5-4.

Nick Weaver continued his standout performance in the sixth inning, hitting his second home run of the day—this time to left field—to extend the lead to 6-5. Unfortunately, Ball State responded with a massive seven-run seventh inning to take command of the game. Eastern Michigan refused to quit, mounting an eighth-inning rally where Ty Stecko drove in a run on a groundout, and Devan Zirwas hit a two-run home run to right field. Despite a 16-hit performance from the lineup—led by Zirwas's four hits and four RBIs and Weaver's three hits and three RBIs—the Eagles’ comeback attempt fell short in a 12-9 loss.

Despite the sweep, the series was marked by significant individual achievements. Nick Weaver recorded the first two-home-run game of his collegiate career, while Devan Zirwas officially surpassed the 100 career hits mark. Looking ahead, the Eagles will face Oakland University at Rochester, Michigan, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 3 p.m. Fans can catch all the action on ESPN+.
