"Merrily We Roll Along" — March 5-8, 2026

From Thursday, March 5, through Sunday, March 8, 2026, Horizon Performing Arts will present "Merrily We Roll Along," a semi-autobiographical musical by Stephen Sondheim. The musical tells the story of composer Franklin Shepard and his two (now estranged) friends in reverse chronological order, ending with the three of them at the beginning of their careers. 

Shows will take place at the Riverside Arts Center at 7 p.m. March 5, 6 and 7 and at 1 p.m. March 8. Tickets are $20 for regular admission and $18 for students and seniors.

Open Mic Poetry and Prose/Writing Workshop — March 6, 2026

On Friday, March 6, 2026, Ypsilanti bookstore Book Love Bar will host two free events that may interest writers. From 5:30-6:30 p.m., BLB will host a writing workshop that provides a space for attendees to discuss the craft of writing and create new work. There will be at least one opportunity to receive feedback from workshop facilitators Tara Hardy and Brad Kraft. Then, from 7-9 p.m., BLB will host its monthly open mic, during which attendees can share their prose and poetry. 

BLB is at 110 W. Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti. All events take place on the second floor, and the building does not have an elevator. For more information, visit BLB's Facebook page.

Intuitive Songwriting Workshop with YpsiWrites — March 7, 2026

Those interested in songwriting may want to attend the Intuitive Songwriting Workshop on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Superior branch of the Ypsilanti District Library from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Attendees will join YpsiWrites and local singer-songwriter Joanna Sterling in the Superior Meeting Room to channel their inner songwriter. 

The workshop is free, and songwriters of all ages and experience levels are welcome. To register for the workshop, visit the YDL's website

When Systems Fail: Community Care Skillshare — March 8, 2026

For anyone interested in learning more about health, safety skills, body awareness or bodywork practices, the local Ypsilanti business Bloodroot Herb Shop will offer a series of workshops and classes Sunday, March 8, 2026. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., participants can attend workshops led by skilled practitioners and educators about topics including massage therapy and reflexology, outdoor preparedness, self-managed abortion and pelvic health. There will also be a workshop about emergency birth protocols that will provide a basic introduction for those interested in birth work.

Allie Beecher

Allie Beecher uses she/her pronouns, and has worked for The Eastern Echo since August 2024. She started as a copy editor, then moved to Copy Desk Chief in the 2025 summer semester. Beecher is a junior double majoring in Business and Public Relations. 

Her job entails supervising The Echo’s copy editing team, ensuring all the content is error-free, and reviewing all work to make sure it follows AP style guidelines. For her, the best part is being able to use her skills to make a difference in the EMU and Ypsilanti community.
