EMU Baseball: Reflecting on the 2026 Season

Resilience and defining moments at Oestrike Stadium

The Eagles' 2026 campaign was a testament to the team's never say die attitude, particularly when playing at Oestrike Stadium, where they secured 11 of their 19 victories. The season reached an early peak during the "Future Student Weekend" in late March, highlighted by a marathon 15-inning walk-off victory over Central Michigan on March 27. This thrilling win set the stage for a three-game sweep of the Chippewas, providing a spark that fueled the team through a demanding Mid-American Conference (MAC) schedule.

As the season progressed toward its conclusion, the team’s character was truly tested. Reflecting on the year, senior Ty Stecko identified the late-season performance as the program's core. "I think the most defining moment for our team is the series win over Ohio," Stecko remarked regarding the season-ending "Generation Series." He noted that this particular series "showed that we as a group were going to play together as a team through adversity of coming up short for the MAC tournament." Stecko further emphasized the internal bond of the roster, stating, "We truly had a great group of guys and I think this showed true character of a team which was that we were not going to give up."

A statistical review of the 2026 campaign

On the offensive side, the Eagles were led by the consistent contact hitting of TJ Williams, who posted a team-leading .324 batting average while contributing 47 hits and 31 runs. The lineup featured significant power, totaling 49 home runs and 297 RBI as a collective unit. Devan Zirwas emerged as the primary run producer, leading the squad with 13 home runs and 51 RBI while maintaining a .266 average. Ty Stecko provided a formidable secondary threat, hitting .296 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI, while leading the team with 13 doubles.

Defensively, the Eagles were anchored by the elite play of catcher Nick Weaver. Weaver turned in a historic defensive season, leading the MAC and ranking third in the nation by catching 28 runners stealing. This total stands as the second-highest single-season mark in EMU history, and his ability to throw out nearly 30% of base-stealers earned him a well-deserved spot on the MAC All-Defensive Team. On the mound, the team saw flashes of brilliance, most notably from junior John Carmichael, who earned MAC Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing a season-long 8.2 innings of one-run ball against Bowling Green on May 1.

Individual honors and Mid-American Conference accolades

The program's hard work resulted in several high-profile individual awards. In late April, Ty Stecko enjoyed a historic four-game stretch where he homered in every contest, totaling five home runs and 10 RBI. This performance made him the first Eagle to homer in four consecutive games since 2002, leading to him being named both MAC Player of the Week and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

The focus on individual excellence extended to the season's final weekend, where veteran John Hale reached the prestigious 100 career hits milestone during the Senior Day matchup against Ohio. These milestones highlighted a roster that, while facing a tough 12-21 conference record, possessed the talent to compete with any program in the MAC.

A culture of academic excellence

Beyond the box score, the 2026 Eagles distinguished themselves as "high achievers in the classroom." This commitment was personified by Michael Pfeiffer, who was awarded the MAC Medal of Excellence, the conference’s highest honor for student-athletes graduating with at least a 3.50 GPA while demonstrating leadership and athletic success.

Ty Stecko explained that this academic drive was a central pillar of the team’s identity. "The team takes a ton of pride in achieving high in the classroom," Stecko said. He noted that for both of his seasons in Ypsilanti, the roster set a goal "to lead the university’s teams in GPA." According to Stecko, this wasn't just about grades, but about the program's broader mission: "The baseball program is set up to graduate leaders, and part of being a leader is taking care of your own work at a high level so you can better support and lead others.”

Honoring the graduating class and forging a legacy

The 2026 season bid farewell to a dedicated group of seniors who helped navigate the program through the transition of the spring. The senior class, which included the following:

As the seniors move on, they leave with deep-rooted connections to the university. Ty Stecko’s final reflections encapsulated the sentiment of the departing class: "The thing I will remember the most about playing at Oestrike is the memories that I have created with each person on the team and staff!" Stecko concluded his EMU journey by noting the lasting impact of his time as an Eagle, stating, “I have gained lifelong brothers through this program and will always be grateful for the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college baseball. The relationships and bonds I built at Eastern are truly strong and will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
