EMU athletics shatters department GPA records

In a display of academic dominance that mirrors their competitive spirit, the student-athletes at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) have once again elevated the bar for scholastic achievement. During the Winter 2026 semester, the athletic department recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.517, the highest ever in the university’s history. This mark narrowly eclipsed the previous department record of 3.504, continuing a remarkable trend of academic growth.

Seven semesters of uninterrupted growth

The Winter 2026 results are not an isolated success but rather the latest peak in a sustained upward trajectory. This semester represents the seventh consecutive term in which EMU Athletics has established a new cumulative GPA record. This level of consistency highlights a deep-rooted commitment to education that transcends individual teams or seasons.

"Academic achievement remains a cornerstone of our department," stated Scott Wetherbee, EMU Vice President and Director of Athletics. He emphasized that these results are the byproduct of a collaborative culture involving coaches, academic support staff, and the student-athletes themselves, who must balance the rigorous demands of collegiate competition with their studies.

Historical department-wide success

Perhaps the most significant milestone of the Winter 2026 semester is the collective success of every single program. For the first time in the history of Eastern Michigan University, all 17 athletic programs finished the semester with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

The individual statistics are equally impressive:

  • 388 student-athletes (84.5% of the department) recorded a semester GPA above 3.0.
  • 411 student-athletes (89.5% of the department) maintained a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
  • 33 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Volleyball leads the record-breaking charge

While the entire department saw success, the Volleyball program emerged as the academic leader for the Winter 2026 term. The squad posted a program-record semester GPA of 3.832, shattering their previous high of 3.717. Furthermore, they established a program-record cumulative GPA of 3.811, leading all women’s programs in both categories.

Other women’s programs also posted elite numbers for the semester, including:

  • Lacrosse: 3.759
  • Gymnastics: 3.730
  • Soccer: 3.702
  • Swimming & Diving: 3.693

Strong performances across men’s programs

On the men’s side, the Baseball program led the way with a 3.481 semester GPA and a 3.545 cumulative GPA. The 3.545 mark represents the second-highest cumulative GPA in the history of the baseball program.

Several other men's teams produced near-record or historic performances:

  • Football: Recorded a program-record cumulative GPA of 3.286. Their semester GPA of 3.316 was the second-highest in program history, and the team led the department with five student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0.
  • Men’s Track & Field: Earned its second-best semester GPA in program history at 3.421.
  • Men’s Basketball: Posted its second-highest cumulative GPA at 3.139.

A balanced academic profile

The depth of achievement across various sports indicates that academic excellence is a department-wide priority regardless of the season or sport type. For example, Women's Track & Field recorded their second-highest semester GPA at 3.655, while Women's Basketball finished with their second-best cumulative GPA at 3.587.

The cumulative GPAs at the conclusion of the Winter 2026 semester further illustrate this widespread success:

  • Soccer: 3.790
  • Lacrosse: 3.774
  • Gymnastics: 3.704
  • Tennis: 3.547
  • Women’s Golf: 3.531
  • Women’s Cross Country: 3.527
  • Men’s Cross Country: 3.485

Conclusion: Building a lasting legacy

The record-breaking Winter 2026 semester reinforces Eastern Michigan University's reputation for fostering "championship success" both on the field and in the classroom. By maintaining seven consecutive semesters of record-breaking GPAs and ensuring that every team surpasses the 3.0 threshold, the Eagles have established a culture of discipline and commitment that serves as a model for collegiate athletics. These achievements reflect the dedication of the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) and the unwavering focus of the student-athletes to excel in all facets of their university experience.
