A fire broke out in a vacant office suite in the Washtenaw Office Plaza, located at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Bellevue Street, in Ypsilanti around 8:30 p.m.

City of Ypsilanti Fire Department Capt. Michelle Stanbury said the cause of the fire is currently unknown, but an investigation will begin tomorrow during daylight hours after power to the building has been interrupted.

Stanbury said no one was injured, but the fire did burn a gaping hole in the roof of the building.

Stanbury said firefighters initially thought the fire was coming from the State Farm insurance office, but after entering the building found it was coming from the ceiling next door in Suite A, which she said has been vacant for roughly four months.

The strip of offices is located at 2140-2164 Washtenaw Ave. between AutoZone and Gene Butman Ford, and houses the Law Offices of Charles Drukis, State Farm, Beltone Hearing Aid Center, Action Services, Pronic and Attorney Lawrence W. Sperling.

Fire trucks from Pittsfield Township and the cities of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti responded to the fire, as well as police officers from Ypsilanti City and Washtenaw County.

Stanbury said her team of firefighters were speaking before a group of Cub Scouts when they received the report of heavy smoke pouring from a building, but the 10-year-old Cubs were excited to get to see the firefighters rush to their truck and drive away with sirens blaring.
